I haven't played IRL since...synchros came out. But a lot of my cousins have picked it up again recently and all their decks are very casual and not meta or current at all. So I decided to buy a deck and the needed stuff.

I'm kind of excited. The last time I played, I didn't have money for it really so now having everything so easily accessible is very awesome. I don't plan to get into it hardcore, just a nice hobby to help stimulate the mind a bit.

Nice me and my buddies got back into it in 2016 and used casual decks it was super fun to play again after years. I ended up with a pretty powerful blue eyes deck I spent 100's on.

What deck are you using it is it a mix.

I decided to buy a six samurai deck. Also bought a few staple singles on Amazon because I don't really want to use 3x enemy controller, 3x dust tornado and 2x backs to the wall.

I was contemplating Lightsworn as it's been my favorite archetype for a while but it was a bit more expensive and I don't want to bore my cousins when we play because I'm taking hours during my turn to mill stuff. Also want to play a slightly more fair deck instead of just dropping Judgment Dragons and gg

this is the most annoying thing you can say regarding ygo tbh, it's literally the only joke people have about it, equivalent to telling the cashier you just printed your money that morning. It hasn't been funny for years, if ever

Legacy of the Duelist is not a very good dueling simulator imo, it's very slow especially summoning animations. Turns in a lightning-quick sim like YGOPro can still be multiple minutes when someone's playing a summon-heavy meta deck, so I can't imagine how long it takes on LotD.

That said, games like that may still be the best way to experience YGO now. Tag Force is really good but the World Championship games on DS are the best for how you get access to new booster packs in a linear fashion to power up your deck against the game's increasing challenges.

As I mentioned earlier, if you want access to all the cards as well as online multiplayer, then YGOPercy is a really good free simulator. Biggest issue is how many netdeckers there are. There's also DuelingBook, which rather than being automated, simulates the experience of IRL Yugioh. It doesn't have programmed effects, you move the cards around yourself.

I've been playing around with a buncha different deck types on LotD and Monarchs is a pretty interesting archetype. Mainly trying to avoid decks that are pendulum/link heavy

Monarchs are cool though it's kinda hard to set up their lockdown now, especially after their draw card was limited.

Pendulum was murdered by MR4 and has received very little support since then, the only nearly great Pendulum deck left is a Magician deck that's functional because of one card called Heavymetalfoes Electrumite. It's a sad state

As far as current strong decks, if you're not making Link plays it can really cost you. Nowadays the best splashable extra deck monsters aren't R4NK so much as Link-3 or Link-4 boss monsters than can disrupt with negations or run over anything on the other side of the field. Just so you know. They're not life or death necessary, especially with MR4 Revision coming that lets Xyz/Synchro/Fusion summon to any monster zone, but great combo decks will use lots of Link monsters.

like Doe said, the Link-era Master Rule is going to make a lot of things seems alien and weird if you haven't played since Synchros, but as of April 2020 a lot of that that rule is defunct because of a revision. you could either wait to get back in until then to make it easier, or (what I recommend) learn Link rules and play before that, that was you can un-learn / not need it as of April and be better.

You could always practice on YGOPro first to get the hang of your deck, and sort of learn by playing against decks using the newer mechanics. I used to play with an Invoked-Ojama-ABC deck fairly regularly.

@ Post #2, pot of greed does draw 2 cards. that means you take the top two cards on your deck pile and place them in you hand

Like I said, I'm not trying to go competitive and worry too much about the new rule changes since I doubt my cousins will care about them either. Any playtesting I'm doing on LotD is purely to see if the deck archetype is fun and if I want to invest in it to use with my cousins haha

@Doe How are Blue eyes decks? That Blue Eyes Chaos Max Dragon looks insane

You can summon Chaos Maxx Dragon extremely consistently. "Impcantation" monsters let you search out the ritual monster and spell. Melody of Awakening Dragon is one of the best Blue-Eyes searchers, and Trade-In is a great draw engine. Throw in Pot of Extravagance since you probably won't get to make extra deck monsters anyway, though I'm not sure if that's in LotD yet. Advanced Ritual Art let's you tribute Blue-Eyes White Dragon from the deck, which synergize with Chaos Form, meaning you might get two Chaos Dragon monsters out (the non-MAXX Chaos Dragon is still alright due to its battle change ability).

What balances Chaos MAXX is that ritual monsters brick easily with a deck dedicated to them, so it can't come out alongside a board of other strong Blue-Eyes cards. Besides that, while its protection IS fantastic, nowadays there are a lot of cards that can banish or otherwise disrupt it without 'targeting.'

Modern cards always explicitly write if they target (meaning, the player declares which card the effect will affect before other cards can be chained in response). But for most older cards it's difficult to be sure without looking up the ruling on a wiki site. Anyway like I said, non-targeting disuption can kill MAXX. The rare boss monster (or not so rare before Links, like S39: Utopia the Lightning) can attack over MAXX.

What Doe said. Pure Blue Eyes were good a few years ago, but the meta has shifted away from them a bit. You can still splash them into decks like Mekk-Knights.
