company rep contacted me later, told i performed spectacularly the first half but the second half was ehhh, consequently declined to offer a position

I guess that's a factor as well. Many interviewers are incompetent and are mainly focused on a script rather than a conversation.

Yeah. I bombed my first interview for a networking related job. I had done ISP tech support for about 3.5 years and thought I was ready to jump into the networking world.

Question 1: How many usable IP addresses do you get with a subnet mask of 255.255.255.252?
My answer: 1
  • My rationale: The way I learned it, 1 IP is taken by the ISP and the other IP is usable for the customer.
Question 2: Have you ever heard of the OSI model?
My answer: No

There were no more technical questions after that. I could tell I wasn't getting the job. After the interview was over, I sat in my car for about an hour outside the building and I was incredibly angry at myself for doing so poorly in the interview.

Years later I got my CCNA and went back and interviewed at that same company. I knocked the interview out of the park, but told them I didn't want the job. I just wanted to see how well I would do at that point.

It's a Cisco networking certification. It stands for Cisco Certified Networking Associate.

You don't need to go to school for it. You have to study and pass an exam or two. With the exams I took:

1) CCENT (Certified Entry Networking Technican)
  • This is the entry-level Cisco certification (can't get this one any more after next month, I think).
  • Took me about 3 months to study for and pass the exam
2) CCNA (Cisco Certified Network Associate) Routing and Switching
  • Took me about another 4 months to study for and pass the exam. Took me two tries to pass this one.
3) CCNA security
  • Took me about 6 months of studying and 3 tries to pass this one.
4) CCNP (Cisco Certified Network Professional)
  • This one requires 3 separate exams.
  • CCNP ROUTE (Took me about 5 months of studying, I think)
  • CCNP SWITCH (Took me about 3 months of studying. I was rushing to get through this because a company bought out the company I was working for and I hated the new place)
  • CCNP TSHOOT (Took me about 2 weeks and 2 tries to pass the exam. The study guide was all review from the route and switch study guides, so I figured I'd just try the exam to see how I would do. The first time I failed by 10 points because I ran out of time.)

I also got a Cisco Meraki certification somewhere in the middle of all that because my job sent me to their official training class.

Yeah, had an interview where the job didnt post the salary and the person who called me said she couldnt discuss.

So I take time off to go to this interview and after an hour I get to the do you have any questions? part and I ask salary range. Its insulting so I tell them they need to be upfront about it then I just left.

I was pretty pissed off.
