Well, you might like Provincetown. :-p

But all joking aside, Yes New England does live up to the hype, if that is your thing.
Money and Mediocre weather notwithstanding.

When I was in grad school my advisor had a place on Cape Cod. Wellfleet to be exact. She used to invite me and another grad student out to swim in the estuary behind her house and either take us out to dinner or make broiled salmon. Her neighbor was the son of Admiral Nimitz.

It's nice when the weather is nice, which is about 2 months of the year. The beaches are overrated IMO but I'm from SoCal.

Provincetown is interesting with the artists and the writers and the LGBT community there.

For my money, if you must be in New England, I'd rather do Newport, or Block Island though. YMMV.

Provincetown is where all the crazy anti-vaxxers live.

Anyway Cape Cod in the summer months is generally pretty awesome. At least if you are vacationing and don't need to work. Living there though isn't that fun any other time of year though as there is nothing to do. The population of the Cape basically triples in the summer and during the winter the weather sucks and there isn't much of anything worth doing except to drink. Plus the grocery stores are expensive as hell.

Idyllic depends on where you live and whether you want to live in the middle of nowhere or whether you want to actually be near civilization. On the plus side you can always live near civilization and drive to any place for the nature. There is lots of places to go fishing, hiking, camping, etc. Depending on what you do for a living it's a great place to live.
