  1. Water's Edge (Seven Mary Three)
  2. Better (Guns N' Roses)
  3. Cumbersome (Seven Mary Three)
  4. Heart-Shaped Box (Nirvana)
  5. When Animals Attack (Institute)
And somehow my top 3 most listened to bands (Pearl Jam, Alice in Chains, and Soundgarden) didn't get a single song in the top 5.

In my defense, Water's Edge is a genuinely great song.

Grunge band in the 90s, got overshadowed by Pearl Jam, Nirvana, Soundgarden, ALice In Chains, Stone Temple Pilots, etc.

You've probably heard Cumbersome at some point in your life, it was their one hit wonder:

Water's Edge is their masterpiece though IMO.

They get shit on a lot, but they're pretty solid tbh. American Standard is a pretty decent album all around, although Water's Edge and Cumbersome are without question their stand-out songs.

Grunge = depression/regret. You wouldn't catch Big Bird opening up the Sesame St show sounding like that.

Pretty sure Bulletproof Skin was also in my top 20. Institute is great.

There's actually a decent bit of variation if you look at most of the lead singers; Layne Staley sounds nothing like Chris Cornell for example, yet both were phenomenal vocalists.

Although to be fair, one of the biggest criticisms Seven Mary Three got and what really hurt them when trying to break out was how much the lead singer sounded like Eddie Vedder, particularly on Cumbersome, which was their only mainstream hit.

It's definitely not for everyone , but I've fallen head over heals for the genre the past few years.

You might like Bush; the lead singer got accused of ripping off Kurt Cobain instead of Eddie Vedder >_>

Their songs Machinehead, Comedown, and Everything Zen are personal favorites of mine.

Water's Edge is a prime example of why i love the grunge genre; It's a song that tells a story that deals with some pretty oof shit, and the moral consequences surrounding it.

It also just sounds really fucking good.

Same reason I love Pearl Jam, and their songs like Jeremy and Daughter. It's great lyricism that dives into subject matter that doesn't all to often get tackled by artists in other genres that get equatable amounts of radio time.

Silverchair-tommorow is one of my most played songs. As far as grunge went, aic and stp, but strangely, stp wasn't in the rock section back then, it was considered alternative rock, well, at least that's where I'd find it at blockbuster music. Favorite album in those days was stp-purple, they really made their own sound after people claimed core was just another Seattle trend they were catching onto

Kanye has been my most played artist every year since 2012 and Charli XCX was finally able to take that spot. I don't remember the exact top 5, but he wasn't even my most played American artist. That went to Taylor Swift

I should probably expand my genre listening again; my music used to be very eclectic, but there wasn't a single non-rock song on my top 100 songs this year, and only a very few explicitly non-grunge bands (Guns N' Roses, The Offspring, and a couple others)

Glad you liked it; even among the Grunge crowds Water's Edge is a pretty overlooked song, which is a shame cause it's wonderful.

For sure! Pearl Jam is solid, like you said. What are your thoughts on Alice in Chains? I like their first two albums a lot. The post-Staley stuff i actually like, but i understand some people not getting into it.

I got really into Alice In Chains a lot this past year, after Pearl Jam, they're my favorite Grunge band.

Dirt is genuinely one of the greatest albums ever made IMO, although their first 3 albums are great in general. Their post-Staley stuff is decent and there's a couple of songs from that era I keep on my main playlist, but typically if I'm going to listen to AiC, I'm going to stick with the Staley stuff.

Have you ever heard of Mad Season? It's a one-album supergroup formed between Mike McCready from Pearl Jam, the drummer from Screaming Trees, someone else (>_>), and Layne Staley as lead singer.

The album is "Above", and it's really fucking good. Very solemn and nihilistic, even by Alice In Chains standards, but also simultaneously mellow and almost soothing on some tracks. It's a wonderful album, and I highly recommend it, it's a good change of pace from the typical Alice In Chains stuff, great as it is.
