Considering how long hes been around and how much of an influence hes been on video game and review channels, youd think that would mean hed have more subscribers.

Most of his Nerd videos are great, and the side content on his channel can be hit or miss, but the hits can be great too (Board James being a notable example, especially since its the one place Mike Matei has a pronounced on-screen presence but isnt annoying at all).

It just kinda puzzles me.

Mike Matei is the main reason

He's annoying, immature, and all over the content.

They have loads of content that lots of fans don't care about, so if you only care about the Nerd and dont want to watch James and Mike Mondays, their movie reviews, or monster madness stuff, it's easier to just find the single video you like upon release via trending and word of mouth.

Case in point, I like Zero Punctuation. The second they started having other content on the Escapist channel, I immediately unfollowed it as I didn't want to clutter my feed with crap I didn't care about.

Do you buy into the theory that he had Bootsy kicked off out of jealousy? I liked Bootsy. Him and Kyle Justin were the two friends I liked seeing show up in videos. Regardless I dont really watch their other videos; AVGN has always been the main draw for me...

He also came around in the infancy of Youtube. Today gaming channels are a dime a dozen, but before him the only focused gaming videos you could see were short little clips of a boss fight or something.

Also I think he's reviewed about every shitty game possible at this point that makes sense to him. He's obviously not too familiar with any game past the Super Nintendo era.

I never really have the side stuff show up in my feed. Just Nerd episodes. I dont use the notifications feature or anything though.

I think probably partly because his original fans for years were before the culture of subscribing to channels on YouTube. My habit certainly was just to check the cinemassacre website from time to time.

Edit plus was there not a phase where they were only hosted on the screwattack website?

Because people only like the Angry Video Game Nerd videos and not much else. I don't subscribe to Matt McMuscles but I still manage to get notified about the Wha Happun videos only. I guess it's similar to that.
