Does anyone else hate where in movies and games, a hero kills a bunch of a bad guy grunts. And then at the end says something like . No I will not kill you( speaking about the final bad guy). We see this in (40 year old spoilers coming) In Star wars, Luke has killed troopers and others. But not it would be crossing the line to the Emperor the person who started all this stuff. (NES Video game Spoilers ) Megaman does all the time too. He has killed his own kind, but he will not off the good Dr. Maybe there is a programing issue there (lol)

I feel like this happened a lot more often in the 80's, back when action movies had you get swept up in the Rambo Rampages that a lot of action heroes would go on, and then try to bring you back to Earth with some cheesy "KILLING IS WRONG" message that contradicted the last 20 minutes you just watched.

I don't like this gimmick either and was one of the main reasons I always felt the Tim Burton Batman movies were dumb. Batman has such a strange policy on killing in them, and the way he lectures Catwoman at the end of Batman Returns makes me wonder what type of morality line he's trying to accommodate.

Actually the Mega Man one has precedent since he's bound by the laws of robotics, one of them being "a robot must never harm a human being."

Don't get me started on Batman. In Batman Begins he murders a whole lot of people, because he doesn't want to murder that one killer Also with the way things blow up. That guy is dead too.

https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/IfYouKillHimYouWillBeJustLikeHim

This trope is grounded on the basis that the act of killing is always wrong, no matter who it is directed against or how well-deserved, or even if it is done with the hope of preventing more evil in the future. This can come across as slightly disingenuous if the hero has slaughtered his way through dozens of faceless mooks just to reach the villain, only to hesitate or spare him at the end because "killing is wrong." In such a scenario, only Character Development can make the disparity make sense.

I don't think it's ever said explicitly, but it's generally implied with things like MM7's opening scenes & Wily's creation of Zero (& by extension, the Maverick Virus).
