...as a percentage of what they were, and actually added pennies to the menu, even though we dont have them here anymore.

Most people pay cashless these days, so that's not that unreasonable. Most products in general are also priced at $X.99, even after the penny's abolition, so it's not like penny-level precision is overly unusual.

That's an expensive restaurant. Holy shit. I can get a good large pizza for $15 from a local business (non-chain)

I guess its like Australia has been as long as I remember where everything gets rounded up or down. .03 is up and .02 is down. People go out of their way to pay electronically if the price is going to round up.

@CTLM
Those are Canadian dollars. And our minimum wage is only $2+ more than some US states that are cheaper to live in with cheaper menu prices. But yay universal healthcare (that I barely ever use). Most of our healthcare goes to morons climbing trees while drunk or people who are sick but not that kind of sick.

Canada. They basically cost more to produce and keep in circulation than they were worth, so they got rid of them several years ago. They're still accepted as legal tender, if the store in question is willing to take them, but sale prices now get rounded to the nearest nickel if you pay cash (nothing happens to debit/credit transactions).

I would assume its rounding to the nearest 5 cents, not 10 cents.

Oh, thats what he meant...

Yeah, we still have nickels.

FYI today, the cost of the large is equivalent to USD $19.54. And youre expected to pay 15% on top of that plus anything else you bought while servers get basically minimum wage at $12.70/hr.

With no pennies, makes no sense, unless ofter tax it hits 0.05 or .10 intervals.
But also most people fo pay debit or credit nowadays in Canada, and then pennies do count.

With cash it would round up or down, with card it would be whatever the price is. The servers all said the same thing - its stupid and doesnt make sense. The menu prices should have been rounded to the nearest five for aesthetics.

The banks. Now businesses either lose pennies or make pennies on every transaction. Its usually the latter which is why some people go out of their way to use debit.

For example if the price comes to $15.83 and you pay with cash itll cost you $15.85. The business isnt entitled to that extra $0.02 on every transaction so people will use their card on principle.
