I've played 3 hours these are my first impressions:

  • Keeps the nice narrator stuff, graphics and world building from previous games
  • Great music
  • Combat is so fucking quick and smooth
  • Enough of bonuses to keep you wanna play
  • There is strategy behind on your choices
  • Plenty of stuff to do in the "hub" to make you stronger or different, like weapon of choice etc.

I'm really loving it atm

I can't wait for this to come out on PS4, hopefully it's not too long after it reaches 1.0.

Interesting it's still in early access like Risk of Rain 2 is and everyone says they feel like complete games already.

Yeah it feels complete, I almost never buy early access, but I trust the devs.

So if Bastion is in my top 10 games of ever and I hated Transistor, am I likely to enjoy Hades? I played Transistor maybe 2 hours and it just did nothing for me. Bastion was a non-stop joy, everything about it clicked but in comparison Transistor felt slow, clunky, awkward, and dull. I really wanna like this but I'm seeing a lot of reviews calling it a mix of the two games rather than something unique and Transistor left a bad enough taste in my mouth that I'm iffy about picking it up

Well the combat is very fast and smooth, and you can still ve tactical with your different weapons and powers you get. Its still a roguelite game so you will die a lot and play it over and over again making some progress.

I forgot about the story presentation. It seems great this far. You get tidbits of lore as you play and progress. Chracters will comment of things thats happened to you, your weapon of choice. One character mocks you how you died but also gives some tips. My favourite character is Skelly, the training dummy to test weapons on. At one point the narrator slipped up and told a secret to the main charcter so he is also part of the cast. Classic Supergiat Games.

How does it compare to Dead Cells?

Thats the roguelite Ive been playing mostly recently. Well they are different in terms of thos being isometric and you go from room to room so there isnt any exploration. But just like Dead Cells it feels like if you die, its your own fault not cuz of some rng mechanics. Combat is faster and smoother.

Basically you choose a weapon at start, they have a basic atrack, some have several like hold to charge, they also have a special attack, dash attack for some etc. Then you have a cast, its a red diamond thing you can throw, but it can get temporary upgrdes for the run like it will explode and do poison cloud, or become a spinning blade etc.
Then you have dash, which also can get upgraded, to do dmg, knock back enemies, do poison etc.

You will find Gods like Zeus etc that grant you boons that will buff your different skills, each god have some certain effects like Dionysos will give poison attacks, Hermes speed stuff, Athena the ability to deflect attacks and projectiles.

So even if you choose the same weapon for 2 runs the combat style can differ depending on the combo of boons you get. There are other types of upgrades as well. For the bow, get a spread attack or shoot 2 arrowa at once but shorter distance, rapid fire but loose charging the bow etc.

I read a bit on their site, thet are heavy story based games and how it works with early access. They said to consider EA as a pilot episode. Thats exciting

Steam currently has a sale on it. Its 20% off AND comes with a giftable copy of Pyre, which I hadn't played. Turns out I could just add that to my library so I basically got both games for $20, so I won't be terribly upset if this ends up being a bust for me.

Couple of hours of play later and this is the most fun I've had with a game in months, maybe years. Been a long time since something was able to evoke childlike glee in my cold, dead heart. Just beat Meg on like my 5th run after unlocking the Eternal Spear. Holy crap that thing's ability to stunlock at a decent range is OP

I like that the different upgrades can make your combat style differ, I've now played for 6 hours and just recently unlocked another new system to customize yourself in the hub.

There's a special deal in Epic games right now where they give you a 10 dollar coupon valid for games priced at 14.99 onwards.

Hades + soundtrack cost exactly that amount.
