It's just basic interaction with people.
Most people just want to belong and be understood.
It's why people don't want solutions to problems but want people to understand they're hurt and get emotional support. A lot of people are just emotionally broken and need any sort of companionship. But because people are inherently selfish, it's rarely given.
Taking advantage of the fact most people are so selfish they can't tell when you're lying to them because they're too caught up in their own self-pity and problems means it's easy to trick them into thinking you're a kindred spirit.
It's basically how the world works at a higher level. From the teacher trying to empathize with the group of brats he or she teachers to the banker pretending he or she knows just how the parents feel.
