seriously I've been playing shmups for 15+ years and while zuns fan made projects are pretty to look at its giving the wrong idea to newcomers in the genre

Omg bullet grazing and tap dodging ultra complex scoring system guys and then we have 90% of the fanbase that doesnt even play the games they just make doujins and gross hentai crap about the shit character designs

The creator named ZUN started making basically fan made shmups featuring pretty to look at but shit to play games. Eventually over the last decade or so well the internet ruined it. To be fair OP is correct the games themselves have always sucked major ass if youre actually into the genre of shmups and know more than Gradius

Its literally fan made garbage. The crappy art style and loli trash could be excusable if the gameplay wasnt absolute cheeks but alas its absolutely dirty sweaty cheeks

Touhou is the simplest to get into. Shift to slow down your character and see your hitbox (something many shmups dont have) and bombs. Some of the games have gimmicks but at its core its simple and more accessible to get into than most shmups where you have to worry about shields, bursts, etc. Also you only need to 1cc the game once to get the good ending whereas other shmups often require you to beat the game a bunch of times with other complicated criteria to fight the true final boss or perfect ending.
Not to mention while a lot of shmup music is good touhou music is on another level. No other shmup franchise has had so many concerts and covers as touhou has.

Well ya it definitely hurts a dead genre find any newcomers that stick around.

Fortunately there is a dedicated forum for the genre itself (not just a standard arcade forum).

90% of that entire forum would also agree with OP though about touhou being not good.

I think it's more hating the fans than the games though. Think... sonic?

never got into it but it's a cornerstone of millennial internet culture

that was a weird post. a lot of shoot em up fans don't like bullet hell games. coincidentally the genre started to die when bullet hell was introduced.

the shmup community is horrible, it reminds me of the fgc in the early 2000s where no one wanted to be around them for any amount of time if possible

touhou is great because of how simple it is. you dont have to worry about convoluted, esoteric scoring systems or systems. all you really gotta know is hold shift to slow down and graze bullets for extra score. its basically the SF2 of bullet hells, which is a good thing to be tbh in a genre that can get hella overwhelming for people looking to get into it.

imagine starting them on something like dodonpachi where you gotta learn how to maintain combo and 1cc the game twice (among other requirements) in order to reach the final stage.
