Game of the Decade?

Minecraft basically created a thriving indie scene with its huge success, and created a cultural impact that's probably going to last for generations and extend well outside the view of just gamers. It pretty much created a whole slew of survival crafting games, as well as being one of the first mainstream examples of a massive creative community, though it definitely wasn't the first.

Dark Souls created an almost whole new genre, and brought difficulty back to the mainstream in AAA games. We're only just seeing people start to experiment with the genre more and branch out, which tells me it could have a ripple effect that spreads throughout the next decade.

Isaac set the standard for "value for your dollar" indie games, and became the template for roguelikes for the decade. This one has a bit shakier of a claim as it can't take sole claim for the indie craze even when you discount Minecraft, but the roguelite genre undeniably traces its more modern roots back to BOI.

League technically was a late 2009 release, but its effects were largely felt in the new decade, for better or worse. The popularity of MOBAs, the rise of games as a platform, and the rise of microtransactions and pay to win gaming can all be attributed to League's popularity. On top of that, League really pulled esports up to its current juggernaut status from the relatively obscure place it was in prior. Nothing it did was particularly new, but you can't deny that League made it mainstream.

Pubg shouldn't need much explanation, Battle Royale has been a popular thing for years, though imo it remains to be seen whether it will last or fade away as a fad.

Quality wise maybe, but in terms of impact on gaming Bloodborne doesn't hold a candle to Dark Souls.

lol those are terrible fucking choices.
BoI isn't a rogulike either. It has perma-death and requires you to start over, that's about it. It's not even turn based or on a fucking grid.

Your games are pretty bad since they're just meme ones that either got shilled to bits or were just popular with kids

I wanted to play BoI for literal years. When I finally got my hands on it, I didn't get it...

I get the art style is cool, vut that's about all it has going for it to me.

Enter the Gungeon seems better in every possible way, except story.

It's fun for the first few hours then you realize it's either "you get OP or you restart the run" once you start unlocking more and more things.
The problem is that developers are incapable of understanding balance and just took a bunch of mods and shoved them into the game along with more bosses and enemies that range from "this is pointless" to "restart unless you have a good run".

Yeah, that's pretty much how it felt. I don't really ever feel potent enjoyment out that. I always feel like I should just be playing something else.

Honestly it's why I play on PC and use infinite charge for the D6 to just reroll items that are not completely broken in terms of being too strong or too weak.

By the time you to the 4th floor is usually when I decide to restart or not.
Unless you're playing as Azzy or Lilith in which case the game is already won

Roguelike (or rogue-like; sometimes capitalized) is a subgenre of role-playing video game characterized by a dungeon crawl through procedurally generated levels, turn-based gameplay, tile-based graphics, and permanent death of the player character.

While I disagree, there are valid complaints for BOI. I was basing it less strictly on quality than on impact on gaming. Gungeon and a few others are better roguelikes/lites in my mind, with my personal favorite being Slay the Spire.

Yeah. I only got ps4. The funny thing is, it went on ps+ super early on. A couple months before I got a ps4. So I was waiting for a sale. Didn't go on sale for like 3 years straight. Finally did, and I played it for like an hour >_>. I tried a few times after that but didn't enjoy it.

in terms of what?

if it's immediate reach and influence there's nothing that comes close to pubg. no other genre or game was treated like the golden goose where nearly the whole fucking industry tried to cash in on the craze with their own version and more or less failed just as quickly except for one obvious competitor.

something like DS was also created in a vacuum since DS-inspired games mostly came from FS themselves.. dunno about the future but as for this decade it's not really close. even when it comes to the combat i'd say arkham style was easily as influential.

Hard, hard disagree. There have been a few AAA stabs at it outside of FS, and a metric fuck ton of AA and indie games in the genre.

Plus you're honestly underselling Minecrafts influence if you think pubg was more of a golden goose.

like? i can only think of nioh as being relatively "big". other than that it has been all about soulsborne(and sekiro).

yeah minecraft was/is also really big and most likely in second place if i had to choose but it just got ported left and right instead of everyone trying to come out with their own version of it.

I just came into here to shitpost but you clearly put actual thought into these poll options so I changed my mind. I feel like of these I'd have to pick minecraft. super influential in terms of what it influentced but also I feel like it's become a big product of its own in a way that none of these others can even hold a candle to. when's the last time you saw foam league of legends items or lego dark souls sets?

Sticking out from this list as missing to me is something to represent the start of VR gaming, like I dunno beat saber or something I don't really keep up with VR. Or maybe that's best kept for the next decade since it's still in early days atm

Hard to pick among Skyrim (on PC with mods), Dark Souls 3, Gears of War 3, Rocket League, GTA 5 even though it introduced some very bad business practices for online, and Battlefield 4

I had about an equal amount of fun in the heyday of all of those games, and before GTAO turned into nothing but a grief fest
