Doctors suck.

They are known to milk you for business.

You: "Doctor, I get fever at night. Chills. Fever so high I hallucinate. Green snot. Yellow phlegm. A weird sound comes out of my lungs if I breathe deep. I get cold sweats. I sneeze, hack and cough all day. I feel weak"

Doctor: "you have an allergy! take some Allegra :) "

*takes allegra* *one week later*

You: "Doctor, I am worse! Look, my yellow phlegm is green too now! I spent a week IN BED! I feel so bad!"

Doctor: "those darn allergies :( . Take some Benadryl too"

No, what about you prescribe some antibiotics, you fucking asshole?! What more symptoms do you want?

Living with a condition doesn't make you an expert on it, what shitty logic.

Having Lung Cancer doesn't mean you know how to treat lung cancer and the medical science behind how it works.

Living with a condition for 10+ years will give you plenty of experience in what works and what doesn't work in symptom management. And not every doctor in general practice is familiar with, or well informed about, rare conditions (my wife has a rare autoimmune disease called Sjgren's syndrome; her GP actually had to resort to looking up the term sialogogue in a medical dictionary during an appointment) -- but that doesn't stop them from rubbishing the research you've done on the work of specialists, because you dared to "go on the Internet".

Don't trust them blindly, either. Same as you wouldn't blindly trust the mechanic who's working on your car. Reserve the right to challenge and ask questions if you have doubts, and don't feel obliged to accept every answer at face value and seek no other opinion.

It's crazy how some doctors are either completely uninformed or will out and out lie depending on how they're feeling. I had a neurologist tell me I couldn't possibly be having seizures because "it's not possible to be aware you're having a seizure".

Oh and how about the shit doctor who came out to see my grandma when she temporarily lost the ability to move her body and unable to get off the floor and said it was her schizophrenia acting up and left her there to deal with numerous strange symptoms, until eventually her head became visibly enlarged and they couldn't deny she had a brain tumour.

Or the doctor who repeatedly told my mother for over a year that her cancerous tumour was an allergic reaction.

This. Seek another opinion if you have doubts, don't just assume you're right. If a doctor gives you a bad diagnosis that you know is bad and you do nothing to change things, that's on you.

It can, but then you aren't learning from experience. In general, personal experience is a bad teacher on its own, but great when mixed with actual education.

my favorite is when they don't even fucking read the patient information sheet they had you fill out. i go in for my chronic back pain, put down that i have scoliosis and was treated at the Shriner's Free Hospital for Children from when i was 11 to when i was 18, wore a brace 22 hours every day for it, i go in and he asks me what i'm here for, i say "back pain", he orders some x-rays and books a follow-up appointment. i go to the follow-up appointment and he takes a look at the x-rays and says "oh you have scoliosis."

NO FUCKING SHIT!?!

Imo opinions like these come from people who've never dealt with diseases out of the ordinary or who've only had good doctors

There are plenty of doctors who don't care and spout nonsense. Not coz they're dumb but mostly coz they don't care

Let's be real. Sometimes experts are wrong. However, laypeople are wrong at much higher rates, including ourselves. Even doctors go to others for their own diagnosis.

It is flawed reasonsing to equate experts being wrong rarely with thinking laypeople are consistantly righter than such experts.

Fair enough but I think the topic is about arrogant experts who won't entertain the possibility that the patient may be right

You should listen to the expert.

the problem with this kind of thinking is that all doctors are not experts in everything related to the medical field and shouldn't be thought of as such. every kind of doctor has a different specific place in the medical field, and most aren't even actual "experts" in that specific place. you definitely should not just blindly listen to and follow everything a doctor tells you simply because they are a doctor.

If it's between their statements and your google searches, you should probably hold a much higher baseline confidence in their opinion.

It should take strong evidence to combat that prior.

So if every medical website you come across says one thing quite clearly and factually, but you're doctor claims it's false you should trust your doctor?

Like I know fully well that there are various types of seizures and I have been getting the symptoms of one specific kind for awhile now, my gp who referred me to the neurologist said they sound like possible seizures but this neurologist claims that there's no such thing as a seizure where you're aware it's happening. Something that is a complete lie. I'm supposed to just accept that because he's a specialist doctor and I'm just a patient?
