This is a lot less ludicrous than most of the stuff Lovecraft did. The ludicrousness, at least at first glance, was the whole point: it made things that much more horrifying when you realized Lovecraft wasn't just playing around. This sounds to me like it could fit right in, if done correctly (and yes, there's an if there, but there always is with Lovecraft; that's how Lovecraft works).
