The level of research that goes into his "History of the world record" videos is always incredible and fascinating.

I always find it fascinating when old game devs put in super obscure tech like the crit hit in Castlevania. It's difficult enough that even expert speed runners have difficulty pulling it off consistently, and yet it appears to be entirely WAD. That's crazy.

Not familiar with this channel, what sort of stuff do they do? I love video game retrospectives and such, can't peep at the moment as am working

He investigates the history of the speedrunning world record of a particular game, usually dating back to grainy VHS recordings through the modern Twitch era! Breaking down the technical explanations of each new glitch that was discovered and the crazy RNG manipulations involved in endless grinding attempts.

I fucken' LOVE that channel. I can somehow sit down and watch an hour long video about speed running and not get bored, which shows how well he produces his content.

Yeah probably the only YouTube show I regularly follow that one consider donating a few bucks to. In the sense of a busker giving out free entertainment and choosing to reward it, I'm happy to drop him the price of a coffee once or twice a year to keep going.

He makes great videos

I find it hard to be impressed by the actual speedruns tho

"he spent 4 years doing 56,700 runs to get the RNG right to knock off 34 frames." just makes me feel bad for the guy

All the top speed runners seem to be as skilled as each other and the runs just come down to battles of attrition

Consistency at that level is a massive challenge. Aside from true RNG grinds, it's almost always the most skilled player that comes out on top if all competitors are grinding. You'll see that often when a new torch bearer for a game improves their own WR 6 or 7 times in the span of a year while competitors struggle to even keep up with them.

But I do feel kind of bad for these speedrunners. I'm sure the enjoy doing it, but I imagine myself putting that much effort into one game and it bums me out a bit. But that's kind of what makes speedrunning so interesting too--The incomprehensible dedication these people put into something so inconsequential. The spirit of humanity or... whatever.

At least there is a subset of the speedrunning community that raises money for charity. That's one positive thing, I guess.

The thing I love about the absolute legend Karl Jobst is that, on top of doing great speedrunning deep dives, he is also an all-time great Golden Eye/Perfect Dark speed runner. Talk about having the credentials for the job.

His delivery is a little stilted, but as far as awkward YouTube presenters go his delivery doesn't actually bother me that much.

I started watching their first video, and it's on Mario Kart Wii ultra shortcuts, and they mentioned that in 2008, online forums were growing in popularity as a thing. What? They were already popular by then!
