Current Events > The old Star Wars EU likely still would've been scrapped even if Disney didn't..

...buy it.

By 2013 the EU was massive and had started moving to the point where it was (depending on how you look at it) anywhere from 45 years to a few centuries away from the films themselves.

Plus Lucas was planning out a sequel trilogy before selling to Disney

Had he gone with that it's unlikely it'd have fit into the massive amount of post-RotJ stuff in the EU

Flims based on various EU books would have been infinitely better than anything that has or will be released.

But Lucas' own ST wouldn't have been based on various EU books.

He had a few concepts he liked and incorporated into the series (Aurbresh, the Outrider, Coruscant, Ayla Secura) but he himself never really consumed any of it.

Even discounting out the "EU isn't all that great" opinion, it's a giant amount of stuff that carefully has to compliment/avoid each other. There's no way that would have passed as a short series of flims.

Lucas was always tinkering with Star Wars. There was never a full sign he'd take the step unless it let him play with cool toys.

Meanwhile the EU had set up a few ongoing plot threads that will never get fruitiion, as well as set up some new characters to follow only to get snuffed out before they got much more than started.

Films based on various other EU books would have been infinitely worse though

The new trilogy got stuff inspired by EU.

And let's face it, a lot of the EU is crap. Even the parts that are lauded are essentially enjoyable, pulpy adventure romps. I suspect many people look at things with very rose-tinted nostalgia glasses.

Correct me if I am wrong, but a lot of EU material was effectively wiped out when George Lucas made the prequels, wasn't it?

At least I remember a lot of stuff involving Boba Fett was.

I mean, they wouldn't have said "Oh, it's all gone" like Disney did, but they effectively would have done this if George had decided to do his own sequel trilogy due to the canon "levels" in the old Star Wars.

A few things were wiped, but very little EU stuff that I remember took place in the hundred year period prior to Episode IV. There was a fair amount of Old Republic stuff, but it took place way before where the prequels would sit.

Kind of a moot point(if you'd even call it a point since most of the EU was fanfiction tier garbo) considering those movies would never have been made. Star Wars was on its last legs before Disney bought it. At most you could hope for a new Clone Wars season. They wouldn't be making any movies and if they did, it's like they said, Lucas already had his plans.

In my opinion, they should have kept the EU going.

But then completely ignored it when it came to motion pictures and television. Just not even acknowledge its existence.

That's kinda what they did, except they didn't keep the old EU going.

Because why would you.

They should have taken the entirety of the EU, ran it through a filter to throw out all the garbage. What little remains gets mixed and cut and molded into a sequel trilogy.

What we would have ended up with is a 3 movie arc that includes Luke, Han, Leia of course. As well as Mara Jade, their kids, Revan & Thrawn. Revan gets to be the Mary Sue.

Again this is kinda what they're doing. They're picking stuff from the EU that can work well to implement in new material, such as Thrawn in Rebels.

Completely ignore it? Heck, Coruscant comes from the EU. Admiral Thrawn does. The son of Han and Leia going dark. Etc
