He's not going to shock anyone or go off the deep end and utterly ruin anything on a whim nor is he going to calculatingly try to do any seismic shifts to the economy or society. Believe me when I say that there are a ton of suburban wealthy voters that are very anti-Trump but don't want to vote for a huge tax increase candidate like Warren or Sanders or relative unknowns like Pete. This voter block head desks at his gaffes but are willingly to look past them compared to his opponents. He got a lot of support from people who argued that a president interested in one term wasn't as beholden to polls and "special interests" (a possible dog whistle) in their decsisionmaking. A lot of people liked the idea. I'm not entirely sold on it, myself. In part because most of Congress is interested in re-election, etc. They could just stonewall everything until a more favorable time or president. This also puts a lot of focus on the VP choice.
