Depends on the zoo--it's a very complicated question

No. It's better to conserve than to let them all be poached in the wild.

it's probably one of those lesser evil things, maybe. I'm really conflicted, cause if you take a step back and look at it objectively, it really does look like a prison

I guess the real question would be which animals do we as humans deem worth protecting?

What makes a tiger's life more valuable than a dung-beetle's.

In the end, are they more for our entertainment than they actually are for the preservation of wildlife?

The do charge at the entrance of the zoo, after all.

Then have wildlife reservations/preservations. Zoos seem pretty inhumane compared to that.

Yeah guy, I realize it costs money to feed and shelter rare, exotic animals.

there's never a consensus on anything.

generally zoos are good for conservation. lots of extinct animals will remain on earth in zoos.

I think for endangered animals that need a safe environment from poachers or other dangers, its ok, as long as they are well taken care of.

Stuff like putting Penguins in a hot area of the world, in a tiny tank, so people can smush their faces against the glass and scare them, no.

The title of this topic is "Are zoo's immoral or not" not "So we're financing a zoo".

Also, you're a prick.

IMO, a big part of this is that if we're going to claim we're preserving endangered animals, we really need to ask what purpose we're preserving them for, and to what end.

Its better than those hunters that pay a lot to kill an animal of an endangered species and claim that theyre actually helping to preserve the species.

I guess creatures like chimpanzees and other primates shouldn't be kept in zoos. They can be especially psychologically damaged from captivity because of things like taunting from visitors.

Some animals should never be captive, like whales (look up info on sea world if you wanna ruin your day), elephants, or other large creatures that wind up confined in spaces way too small for them. Others would be those that live in extreme environments, like someone mentioned, penguins are a good example. In general most animals should not be captive, though many adapt to it just fine so its not a big deal.

Well, fucking DUH!

As i said - to what end? What's the point if the only reason you're keeping them alive is to keep them from dying out? Is there any plan to reintroduce them to their habitat, to allow them to thrive again? Or do we just think having a few token members of the species sitting in shitty little enclosures, only being allowed to do what we want them to do and being otherwise completely dependent on us counts as "saving" them?
