i haven't had that yet on either pay or what i've enjoyed, but my partner recently got it and it's making me feel v low about my life. i don't make much money and my job probably won't be around in 5 years time but i really enjoy working in media

i want to get into being a designer as my next job, which should allow me to feel better about actual progression and it'll be worth a little more money. and then afterwards, the aim is to fully transition into UI/UX design or other similar well paid jobs

I'm never gonna get that job, sadly.

I took my first professional job just to get my foot in the door but seven years later all I have experience in is a different industry, and on a platform I hate to hell and back to boot.

Many many a job description have I looked through and seen one of:

Minimum _ years experience
.Net

And fallen further into despair. I officially gave up earlier this year. It's evidently my destiny to hate my job.

Not gonna happen. I think I chose the wrong field for enjoyment, but I'm not willing to put in the investment to change since I'm making decent money.

Nothing is stopping you from learning a new language. In your field, if you aren't constantly learning something new then you'll get left behind.

You're absolutely right. But that isn't the issue. I know lots of languages.

Problem is twofold:
1. The only development jobs are .Net, and I hate .Net.
2. This isn't the industry I want to be in but it's become the one I have experience in.

1 isn't strictly true, of course. I saw a Java job posted in Texas last week.

there are a lot of younger millennials who are working in tech and have made it. mostly software engineers, developers and product managers

Well can't help you with 2 then. For #1, you need to expand your search for remote jobs if your local area isn't bringing in the results. Also I assume you've worked with IT recruiters to look for non .NET jobs? Most companies these days only work with recruiters rather than posting positions themselves.

This one, really. When I started, I had my CCNP Routing and Switching certification, but very little hands-on experience as a network engineer. I'm the company's first network engineer and I've built the vast majority of the network. I'm moving on to another company next month that has a much larger network and it'll be a huge opportunity for me.

Most of the big tech companies are on Java or Go. But I think theyre mostly in Austin so not sure if youd want to relocate.

On topic, Id say my current job. I went back to my old company but the first time I accepted a role here, I knew I finally had something solid. I still dont know how I even got the job, they wanted someone senior and I only had a year of experience in the industry. But I was an engineer before that and they valued it. Before that, I wasnt making much and felt very stuck. I just had to leave the engineering industry and took a few risks to get here.

Not there yet, but I'll have "made it" once I land a stable research position

Honestly, the whole concept of "making it" is kinda regressive. It begets stagnation imo

I don't know. I'd probably feel more like I made it when it comes to reaching a certain income level. In terms of job position, probably if I was working for myself or something.
