It's just not as good.

The biggest complaint is that the item management is a lot more annoying. Rather than item boxes, you simply drop shit on the ground. Nice for when you need to empty your inventory to grab a key item, annoying when you have three key items you need on the other side of the map.

I seem to remember the partner system being a little bit clunky too, but I might be making that up.

It was released on the Gamecube, which maybe ten thousand people bought. RE0 didn't really get that much hate back in the day.

It's clear they just got halfway through making it a co-op Resident Evil but couldn't figure out how to fully implement a functional co-op system and so just ended up making the best of what they already had. So you end up with a lot of mechanics that don't really make function well as part of a single player RE experience and get in the way of the things that do work. It's far from the worst entry in the series, but it is very flawed.

It's a solid game. Just drawn out and a little clunky.

I would put it and Code Veronica in the same category. Not nearly as good as RE2, RE3 or REmake.

RE4 was quickly ported over to the PS2 when they realized they actually had something. That's when the RE4 praise really picked up. Before then it was just your usual reviewers spewing the usual garbage. PS2 release solidified it as a great game. I'm sure opinions of RE0 would be a little higher if more than twenty people who actually bought Gamecubes would have got the chance.

the heck are you talking about, everyone knew RE4 was fucking golden the second it came out. I was there during the hype and all the backlash from the dev cycle, RE4 was bombastic.

It was the worst in the series at that point.

Playing as two characters was sort of a neat idea, but it wasn't fun and often times far more of a hindrance on the fun.

But honestly, the biggest problem was the inventory story. Super limited space and the removal of item boxes. I think this was the worst thing the franchise had done at this point. It was so tedious and annoying. Hated it.

Stop pulling nonsense out of nowhere. RE4 was advertised to death when it came out on GC since Nintendo finally had an edgy adult game. GC also sold around 20 million plus consoles and I dont remember the numbers but they were around the same for Japan and NA. And RE games sell way more in the states than Japan.

People forget that Zero was the game where Capcom tried to abandon the item box only for the item system to get 10x worse. It made venturing into new areas really...dumb because you had no idea what weapons to bring with you. So, towards the end, you can have all your strong weapons still at the beginning of the game. There are shortcuts, but...the system was an utter failure.

This failure, imo, may have inspired them to go in the direction they did with RE4. And that was a hell of a game.

Nah Code Veronica is the best game in the series. Easily the best story.

RE0 was fine, just not as good as the excellent REmake.

It probably would have had a cult following if it was also released on PS2. But with Gamecube selling so low it couldn't even get that.

There are probably some RE fans that cult-like it but it was easily the most difficult game in the franchise due to the puzzle solving via the tag team mechanic and the inventory management. Also if I recall the zombies were MUCH tougher in it. In theory it was a decent idea but this was back when inventory management was sitll stuck in 90s RE mode. Also the close quarters made things feel cramped and cluttered, which may kind be what they were going for- but in the end it's more of an uncomfortable claustrophobia rather than horror-inducing.

GC sold poorly in Japan. With only 4 million units sold. PS2 was sitting at 21 million units

The only way the Gamecube got in the way of the game's success was the RE was still predominantly coined as a PS title despite the Dreamcast having RE:CV, but I don't recall that being an issue since RE:Make was released earlier in 2002 and was a critical and commercial success.
