Lazy; incoherent policy; obsessed with appointing people, usually friends, from the private sector to government; increased national debt; most jobs created were low-paying; helped the rich get richer, and the poor get poorer; dis-engaged; pretty old when he become president.

And yet, he was often very popular, and served two terms. Please explain to me how the American public made this possible. Hard mode: you can't call the American public stupid.

carter (and his vp mondale) put great effort into reining in the excesses of the deep state. in response, the deep state (led by bush) sabotaged carter's presidency and re-election campaign and subsequently whitewashed carter's economic reforms, attributing them to reagan. seeing as these reforms that carter kicked off and reagan followed up on proved extraordinary successful, reagan was reelected in a landslide.

The American public are ill informed and lack a certain finesse towards awareness of what really happens behinds the doors.

And this includes me.

Not a fan of Reagan at all, but the dude annihilated Mondale in '84. He must have been doing something right in the eyes of the average American at the time.

Carter got elected because the republican party had its own little brand of 'berniebros' situation in 1976, while the allegedly "winnable" establishment candidate won the nomination anyway.

Many Americans and most Republicans care more about whether something appears good rather than whether it actually is good.

Makes sense to an extent. Up until the Reagan presidency, conservatism as a brand was a bit of an "outsider" political trend, somewhat resembling modern garden variety libertarianism, albeit less socially liberal and more hawkish.

To be fair though, Watergate came as an unprecedented shock, and Ford's pardoning of Nixon was an extremely unpopular move.

Corporate and wealthy class dominance masked as freedom from government control
