It was rarely that it was bad, but rather poorly executed. There were some great ideas hampered by various issues.

The jokes were a big issue with me looking back. Like Luke tossing his lightsaber in the beginning, hilarious and unexpected but it undermines the epic moment that TFA ended on, and doesn't really fit any of his character. There were much better ways to do that scene, even just having him drop the lightsaber and walk away. The idea was good, execution awful. Or having poe taunt the imperial fleet, funny idea but it made them out to feel like jokes and removing any tension regarding them, making the ongoing chase a lot less harrowing.

Some of it was still very well done, and I generally consider the final act to be very solid, and many twists, like reys parents or snokes fate, did land and improved the story for me. Rose was a poorly managed and disappointing character, but that's my only complaint there. Visually, the movie is stunning, and it just seems a lot like a great story told by someone unsure how to properly tell it.

.... Which honestly reminds me of Lucas so I guess it fits star wars well.

Floating Leia still sucked.
