If there were only automated cars on the road, it's improve traffic and so many other factors exponentially, but Idk if well ever be able to get to that point. So many things to consider.

No, we still allow cars on the road from the 19th century.

Yes. Or so my engineering professor seems to think. I'm inclined to agree with him

The american prison system is a sorry mess but giving them game consoles isn't going to solve anything.

Well yeah, but he wasn't suggesting that we replace all cars on the road with automated ones tomorrow

By the time we have enough out in the field to make that a reality, I'm sure the safety will have been improved dramatically

True, but that isn't necessarily as bad as it seems. The more self driving cars are out there, the safer they become as they communicate with each other. If all cars are automated, a lot of possibilities open up, and we might not even need stoplight intersections. It's more consistency with detecting people and objects in the road that's needed.

I think there's a percentage (though I don't know what it is) where if more than that percent of cars on the road are automated that they'll be forced on the rest.

I could see it working best if it were a city thing like subways.

Set up a "rail" system in a big city like NYC, you go to the depot and program a destination, basically rent the car instead of owning your own self-drive.

Still a huge infrastructure shift, but might be easier.

I think theres still far too much room for human error. If we get there, it probably wont be anytime soon.

The ideal, imo, would be a shift removing parking structures from cities and strictly using mass transit in city limits. This would free up a ton of space, and also make any given city far more walkable.
