The comparisons to Scorcese movies can be seen as inspiration of style but it blatantly rips off almost everything about the main character in Memoir of a Murderer and I'm not sure why no one has pointed it out yet.

1. Unreliable narrator: both Joker and Kim Byeong-Soo suffer from a mental illness. This plays a huge role in both movies and it plays out almost exactly the same way, even with the same revelation sequence. But Memoir of a Murderer respects the audience to figure out most of it on their own instead of laying out the obvious (Zazie Beetz) and explains what needs to be explained in order for the movie to have purpose.

2. Both characters share the same quirks: Joker and Kim Byeong-Soo both cannot control their laughter (Joker kinda hams it up and makes this a defining trait of course while Memoir of a Murderer uses it to show Kim's mental illness progressing), both do not have social skills, and are unable to sympathize.

3. Both movies have the same family issues: Joker kills mom for lying to him. Kim kills wife for cheating on him. Joker finds out Thomas Wayne isn't his dad, Kim finds out his daughter isn't really his daughter.

There's a whole lot more things but these are the most damning imo. The more I watch other movies the more I dislike the Joker outside of Joaquin's performance.

those all sound like generic, infinitely retread plot points scattered throughout endless amounts of fiction

I pray god will curse the writer, as the writer has cursed the world with this beautiful, stupendous creation, terrible in its simplicity, irresistible in truth

They're just all shared in both movies? you should watch both and see what I'm saying. Maybe I'm not explaining it clearly enough because I'm hot off of watching Memoir but it's blatant.

Memoir of a Murderer is on Netflix btw. Great movie.
