Dreamfall: Chapters is the sequel to 90's adventure game the longest journey about a girl living in futuristic dystopia and got transported to another world to save the balance of the two worlds. one world where science thrive, the other where magic exist. after the conclusion, the series is followed by it's 2004 sequel, Dreamfall: the longest journey which follow a new protagonist.

in 2012 kickstarter campaign started for the dreamfall sequel which ended on super cliffhanger. however i think the game's writer (Ragnar Tornquist) ran into a trouble and wrote himself into a corner. i found the first few dreamfall chapters episode good, but went downhill quick after episode 3. it spend so much mystery building, like decades in the making. stuff that the original longest journey have teased since like 97'

but it offer no payoff, satisfying explanation, deus ex machina, forgotten plot lines and just really bad execution all along.

that said, the longest journey itself (the 90s game) is self contained, and it's still the best presentation of TLJ universe. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Longest_Journey

TLJ and dreamfall is legit one of really well written games ever made. the first dreamfall have its problem like forced combat and some shitty puzzles, but overall it is a good game. everyone thought dreamfall chapters is that big finale everyone waited 20 years to come, but no. i really think ragnar wrote himself into a corner. the deus ex machina is so bad, it retroactively ruined entire dreamfall plotline.

that said i really like dreamfall and dreamfall chapter's 2 main characters. hell. most characters in this series are great. the finale fucked it all i am still pretty pissed.

this is the spoiler if you really want to know:

in the end of dreamfall 1, the main character of the longest journey died. the conspiracy of corporations who found the secret of magic world continues. in dreamfall chapters, aside from the 2 main protagonist, you follow a little girl living with her extradimensional parents outside of time which is implied to be april ryan's reincarnation (TLJ main character)

there are alot of unanswered question about april. her implied dragon blood, how she reincarnates, how will she connect with the new protagonists, but no. in the end the new little girl came as adult from a portal in the big confrontation with no explanation at all. how does she get the world - hopping powers, even nothing is confirmed if she's april ryan reincarnation or not. her extradimensional parents never get explained and how she live outside the 2 worlds basically outside time. she just became "whoops, here is magical girl came out of nowhere to save the day"
