I don't see how you can suspend your disbelief at ordinary people throwing vending machines, other drawing swords from under their skin, and still other driving down walls, but not suspend your disbelief at a girl getting surgery to look like a totally different person.

The surgery is not what what's unbelievable. What is unbelievable is getting surgery to get the attention of a boy after he nearly succeeded in killing her.

Plenty of people stay interested in people even long after they show themselves to be abusive as hell, plus plenty of people get surgery in the hopes of being seen as attractive to the ones they are interested in. If anything you shouldn't really need to suspend your disbelief at all.
