I had to sign for it since it was a grand jury and not regular jury selection

If I knew what it was I wouldn't have signed

It's a letter that you aren't expecting and you have to sign for it, odds are it won't good.

Awww... So, they tricked you. If only you didnt answer the door. Then they would have sent it to the post office. If you knew you had nothing coming in the mail, you could have just not signed for anything...

It did go to the post office because I wasn't home, I thought it might have been insurance related because I just got insurance through my work and was waiting on some paperwork

Had to do that back around 2000. Went for jury duty, sat for one jury selection, didnt get picked and when we returned to the jury room was told the other cases were all already settled for the day, got paid the $5 stipend and were allowed to leave.

I've been lucky. Only got one summons in my life. Had a good excuse to get out of it as I had my own trial and charges to deal with on that date

I technically got two. They say its random, but Im not so sure. Like right after I got out of the military, I got one sent to my house back across the country. So, my mom sent it back saying I dont live there. And then within like a week, they sent me another one to my current home. But I was out of the state during the time. So I didnt go...

Oddly enough I was selected for the panel screening the last two or three times I was called in for jury duty. I was honest in my responses and was not trying to weasel my way out but each time one of the lawyers would ask me to be dismissed. Granted one of those times I actually dozed off or mentally phase out when called to answer some questions.

Similar happened to me this year but i went like 4 days i think and never got picked. Telling them i was CO kept getting me booted off the panel by the defense attorney.

I got 42 bucks though instead of 5.

Ive been summoned twice. First time was to the California St courthouse in Chicago. Spent the whole day there until 5pm. My pool was selected, but they picked 12 jurors before I could be questioned.

Second time was at Daley Plaza in Chicago. My pool was picked first and I was selected. Got to spend 3 days downtown for a traffic accident that awarded someone $500. The $17.20 I got each day wasnt enough to pay for the $21 parking (not to mention the gas and 3 hours it took each day to commute).

3 hours? Why did you have to travel so far?

It was 3 hours total of commuting each day, so about an hour and a half each way. I live in the suburbs of Chicago, but was summoned to a courtroom in downtown Chicago. I live in Cook County, which extends from Chicago to as far as 30 miles west, which is basically where I am. You can get summoned to I believe 3 courts in Chicago, and one in the suburbs. Problem is that a large majority of the courtroom stuff takes place in the city, so youre much more likely to get summoned to the city.

In good traffic, it would take me about 45-50 minutes to make the drive. During rush hour in the morning and evening, a bit over 90 minutes (which was on the fortunate side - it can take 2+ hours easily).
