Its been a while since Ive been in physiology class but its something about the low level pain signal overriding the itch signal in our brains to provide the body with relief or something like that.

Although, scratching causes a release of serotonin which makes the itch feels itchier IIRC. Its been a while. Someone can correct me on that if Im wrong. Its too late to pull out those old notes.
