Why do we have a major holiday about eating and eat such a bland meat that you have to drown with stuffing to be edible.

We should eat some sort of cow or something special.

But even properly cooked, wouldn't you rather have a properly cooked steak or something.

No one goes out to eat turkey.

By that logic why would you ever eat chicken over steak, or pork chops over steak, etc etc

Turkey is its own thing and is delicious. Steak is also delicious. They are both good and there is no need to limit yourself to only one or the other.

But one is way more delicious than the other and it definitely isn't turkey. And this is the holiday specifically celebrated by eating.

The solution is to go to an expensive Las Vegas buffet so you can have all of the above.

I've always wanted to do one of our local casinos for Thanksgiving but the ones with the best buffet are 18 and older only. Too many kids in the family.

But I don't save steak for a holiday. I can eat it any time. Turkey is more fun to go all out preparing, is more communal, and even if you do like steak better (which is subjective), is still delicious when properly prepared.

Dont do the big ones on the strip they are overpriced.

Head down the freeway to the M is my recommendation.

You can eat turkey anytime too, we have chosen not to because it isn't as good.

I understand the concept of holiday food but I don't like turkey much. I never even finish a drumstick.

Random thought on finishing turkey, I cant remember the last time i saw less than 3 people finish a Disneyland turkey leg.

Probably a week's worth of salt content but one of the best shareable snack/meal values in the park.

Agreed.

Unless you come from some place where the cost of living is real low, but then i would wonder if you think anything in vegas is worth the price.

Btw anyone that finds themselves in the San Diego area I highly recommend the buffet at the Valley View Casino. Of all the SoCal area casinos it is far and away my favorite buffet.

I went to two of them around there over two days, and I can't remember if it was that one or the Pala casino buffet I really liked. One of them introduced me to the idea of adding an egg to a mongolian grill and whoa.

Another one I really recommend is the Chumash casino. It's north a bit and further west of LA near the beach. There's a quaint little Danish touristy town close to it too.

Oh right and the seafood buffet at the Morongo casino outside Palm Springs is also excellent.

I think I didn't like the Valley View buffet. I think that was the buffet I tried.

Anyway, just do like I did and move across the country and then you don't have family anymore and can do whatever you want for Thanksgiving, like Brazilian steakhouse or IHOP.

You do not need to fry a turkey to make it good. What has made for so many bad turkeys is a: not giving it a dry rub (which everyone agrees is good for steak, so rub your turkey), b: stuffing it (which means cooking it longer and drying out the bird), and c: not putting some aromatics like thyme and rosemary inside the bird as it cooks. Hell, I'll put turmeric and ginger in there and I'll knock you on your ass with my turkey.

Edit: Quit cooking it without seasoning, quit stuffing it, quit basting it (REALLY QUIT BASTING), and add extra herbs because the oven lets the bird absorb the taste.

yes, a dry brine makes all the difference and basting doesnt do anything.

we had a second minithanksgiving with some of the food that didn't make it over here for thanksgiving, including another turkey(Why we were going to have two turkeys i dont know, especially since someone brought a ham yesterday).

For the record, todays turkey was better than yesterdays turkey, but we didnt have stuffing so it was replaced with smothering the turkey in gravy. And mashed potatoes.
