If you had a charmander or a Pikachu starter, butterfree was vital for Brock because confusion was your strongest attack since nothing else worked.

Yeah if you really want to use Butterfree Sleep Powder, Stun Spore, Psychic, Giga Drain, Thief, Toxic, and Sunny Day with Solar Beam if you really wanted are pretty much your only viable moves. Even then, its pretty trash.
