I never know what laptop is worth the price. I need something to write papers, work with Microsoft office apps, downloads, video editing. Maybe some gaming, but I think this will crank up the price.

What should I be looking for

See this is where I get stuck. I have no idea what I should be spending.

I guess around $500

You won't get any serious gaming machine with only $500. I don't know if I'd want to video edit on a $500 machine either. The other things you listed you'll be fine to do for sure, though.

The HP Pavilion Gaming Laptops are usually on sale for like $600 and are pretty solid gaming machines. I have one and can run shit like Gears 5 at 1080p/60fps with no problems. I got it for about $700 though, but I see it under $600 online fairly often.

Edit: if you go with one of these I highly recommend a cooling pad for it because it gets hot as fuck when gaming. This is probably true for most gaming laptops but it's the only one I've had and it's a "budget" one so idk if more premium ones have better internal cooling.

So I suppose my next question is

What qualifies for a good video editing / gaming experience?

And

How much do those cost?

As soon as you throw in "video editing" or "gaming", the cost for good goes up several fold (because of things like graphics cards, better screens, and cooling). I got my mom a 15 inch Lenovo with an i3 and a 256 SSD from Best Buy for $279 and that will be super quick for all of her web browsing and solitaire needs.

I want to be prepared for downloads, uploads, editing.

Gaming is meh since I have a ps4. And I also feel like laptops have low life expectancy. Don't want to spend more than home console prices just to play maybe one or two steam games.

This one is on sale for $650.
That sounds reasonable I guess. What makes this laptop good? What other laptops compare?

Sorry I'm a nub.

I bought an acer during black Friday maybe 10 years ago. I thought it was pretty good. Never played much games on it. Mugen. Bioshock.

But then the power jack supposedly stopped working so I could never charge it after four or five years. Haven't bought a laptop since.

Dude what games?

That and "will you be away from an outlet for more than 3 hours while doing anything other than video editing or gaming" is all that matters

If it's not video editing or gaming then most gaming laptops will get 4-5 hours at least if you optimize it a bit. Like disaling Windows things, lower brightness, etc.

Unless you name games I can't really say anything other than "i5, 8gb of ram, ssd" which isn't helpful since it gives you too much choice so I'll still try to help narrow it down

I am thinking of getting a new gaming laptop, but tbh, I mostly play Doom 2 in 1080p on this thing haha. I got this one many years ago and it has an ancient GTX 765M on it.
