Slumber Party actually does it well because the characters are very solid, smart, and capable. Plus it's a hell of a lot more subtle about its undertones.

Nope. There's nudity, sometimes very blatantly exploitative, bit the characters always act like real, believable people.

Slumber Party Massacre isn't a good movie though and if you didn't say it was directed by a woman, no one would ever guess that.

The phallic imagery of the drill is overstated, but the stabbing/etc. of slasher movies have always been phallic.

That's not what I'm saying. The movie gets attributed as "feminist" because it was directed by a woman and because the original script was written by a feminist. But the shooting script was changed to take out most of the parody elements of it and it was directed in a way that completely downplayed those elements.

So if you look at something that's supposedly feminist with a female writer and a female director and it's indistinguishable from a ****ty slasher film of the time period, how can you make an argument that it's feminist?

It's feminist because it's showing competent women in a variety of roles usually only portrayed as men.

Gotta be honest, I'm often a little vague on what people mean when they say a piece of art is "feminist." Both the writer and director say they created it to be a metaphor for the fear of getting laid for the first time. I'm a modernist, so I'd argue that yeah, that probably makes it feminist, although not particularly successful at it.

It's not just that, but that it does a great job of showing women in a variety of roles without making it out to be anything out of the ordinary. Carpenters, electricians, martial artists, etc etc.

How are they competent? Just because one of them successfully kills him before he's murdered everyone? That's common across many slashers with a female main character.

Like compare that to JLC in e.g. the most recent Halloween movie.

Not really a surprise. Commentary on the typical slasher film and how stupid women are in them was half its intent.
