The past few years? Try the last 30 years. TC, the honest reason is two-fold. Marketing campaigns for pop/soda companies were pretty racist in that non-white people didn't exist in their strategies. It was just white America being focused on. The people at Sprite saw black and Latin communities (mostly inner-city) and saw potential. So they created ad campaigns with rappers and basketball players starting back in the early 90's. The ads were authentic, not patronizing and those communities responded very positively. And ever since then, Sprite has had way more support because even after the success, they STILL promote and sponsor things popular in the culture.
