A white woman to play a real life black woman whose race is an important part of her identity.

It was so long ago. Nobody is going to know the difference, he reportedly said.

just another example that studio executives really dont care about actors not looking like the characters they would be portraying. Nobody should even be thinking it wise for a white person to play a black person, let alone actually say it out loud or online.

It was a different time back then.

No need to shame that individual for a foolish idea from ages ago. It's not like it actually got approved.

You know, I don't really buy much into most contemporary definitions of social justice, but what the hell possessed the studio executives to think that this was a good idea, even in 1995?! Seriously. What the ****.

I've never seen Hamilton, but it would be a valid take if Alexander Hamilton was played by a black man. Considering the racial dynamics of the time, you weren't going to find a non-white Founding Father of the United States.

That said, casting a white woman as Harriet Tubman would be a ridiculous decision.

http://www.playbill.com/article/where-is-the-original-cast-of-broadways-hamilton-now

Most of the founding fathers cast were black. That was kind of the whole conceit of the play. The director has explicitly said in interviews his casting was conscious, not color blind. Hamilton himself was Latino. I think the only white founding father was Washington.

By the way, I'm not saying Julia Roberts in this role is a good idea. It's incredibly stupid and I'm glad they didn't go through with it.
