I don't even think he's processing grief when he does it, because if it's not a relative then it's some guy down the pub or whatever. There's honestly one of these every two weeks and the personal connection gets more tenuous each time.

The conversation will go like this:

Me: So Tim, big weekend plans?
Him: Oh no, no got to take the wife to see her uncle Johnny's step brother at the hospital. Aye he's not keeping good. Not very responsive in the hospital bed. You can tell he's there but fading. Doctors say his kidneys are shutting down and his stool samples have all had blood in them. So we're just expecting it any day now. Aye he looked fair muckle when we last saw him. The guy needs to go. He was all yellow and skin flaking and all. And they said last week that he's stopped passing urine, so they've got him on a catheter now.
Me: Oh. I'm sorry to hear.
Him: Aye it's no the best. But I think it's well past his time you know? And Sheena needs the space, it's been quite hectic at home trying to get the house sorted out. There's been...

It's kind of sad but I really don't know how to respond to him.
