What used to be 1000 different cool unique forums for various interests is now just 1 (reddit). What used to be many search engines and/or entry points into the internet at large is now just 1 (google). etc etc

eh, anonymity has its pros and cons
people feel more free to be fuckwads when they hide behind a username, it takes a certain amount of guts (and lunacy) to put your real info out there and say "I am a fucking asshole! worship me!"

This is true, but anonymous fuckwads could actually be really entertaining and unique. When people put their own face and info up, they have to start living up to that face. They have more of an ego. When you're given anonymity, you're a bit less guarded because you have less of a reason, ironically, to wear a mask.

The prevalence of "look at me look at me" social media has definitely affected the way people behave even in anonymous chats and forums, I feel.
