Current Events > Playing FF8 remaster and I'm reminded why I hate the game.

1) The characters are so fucking bad. Especially Zell. I wanna murder him with a rusted and jaggy iron skillet. Why are they allowing a someone who is clearly on the spectrum and not the mild end of it to be a fucking secret agent? Like, Squall being annoyed with him is not just Squall being fucking awful, he's so in your face doing nothing but stupidly making it known to the entire universe around him that he exists.

2) The pacing is just flying through the air with no real time to stop up and explore. I'm assuming I can just... well, not continue the story and explore the Galbadia continent, but it doesnt really seem opportune like other FF games and if I advance the story a bit suddenly I'm an entirely new place. Oh you did X1? Gotta do X2 right away and then X3 (the worst one, wtf Brett Ratner) right after that, and then Y123 in rapid succession. Just got a mission to assassinate the sorceress and I feel like the only thing I even know about the plot so far is empire bad, resistance good possibly. Also even if I wanted to explore, at least before unlocking the first "vehicle", the camera is making that a completely terrible experience when you don't know where things are.

3) And most of all, the annoyance that it feels like I'm actually gimping myself by playing the game and leveling up. You know what I like doing in RPGs? Fighting enemies and getting abilities and whatnot. Just general progression. But because I'm doing this rather than min-maxing with all +1 abilities attached it genuinely feels like I'm fucking shit up for myself and gaining nothing in the process because enemies scale with you. Those 22 or so levels I've gained with Squall have all been a huge, actually detrimental waste because I did them before gaining the ability to get extra stat buffs with them. It's a huge kick in the nuts to my desire to just play the game.

So yeah, hating it as much as ever, thought I'd give it another chance what with the remaster and all. However, I've decided that this time I'm actually gonna end up beating the game, which I think Ive never actually done before so I will persevere and possibly find some enjoyment in it as it moves forward. And I haven't even gotten to the orphanage part yet!

Also, I don't care about Laguna and wish the game would stop interrupting the one story I'm trying to get invested in to randomly get into another one with a cringe lord.

Also also, I literally think the only time I've ever gotten limit breaks in the game so far has been from Rinoa counter with her dog. One time killing an enemy I was drawing powerful magics from, which took me like 40 minutes to find again.

Quistis just decided to abandon her post during an important mission to apologize to Rinoa for deservedly snapping at her. Because for some reason this couldn't wait. And somehow this results in the whole party being locked into a room instead of Rinoa.

That's one of the most blatant examples of characters turning dumb because the plot demands it I've ever seen.

I'm honestly shocked. I don't remember this at all.

Have you considered Earthlock?
It's essentially a PS1-2 era FF that's only a bit annoying.

It's really bizarre how all of the cast is pretty much ignored in favor of Squall and Rinoa's romance.

I like a lot of things about 8. Its setting is really cool, the sound track is fucking bomb, and Laguna's story is pretty sweet. They honestly could have probably made a better game had it focused on Laguna.

With the junction system, you don't really need to use those +1 stat growth skills. You can pretty much near max your stats just using magic.

Magic that you should be getting from modding cards after playing Triple Triad for half of your playtime.

I think Tornado or Life is easy to get cards for, which can boost your HP to insane amounts. Then just let it fall into the yellow and spam Triangle until your limit break pops up.

You can literally use a limit break every turn while having more HP than you know what to do with until you start hitting high 60s so I think.
