Monday through Friday, anyway

I have an hour each way trip to school, so I've decided to start delving into a bunch of albums/bands I've been putting off listening to. Some will be mainstream, others obscure, across all genres

I'm no music critic, but I'll also share what I thought of each one. Anyway, here's yesterday's:

Metallica - ...And Justice For All

So, I'm only somewhat familiar with Metallica. I've heard a handful of their popular songs, one of them from this album: One. This one didn't really resonate with me, but I did enjoy the lyrical content of the album. Thats... actually pretty much all I enjoyed.

Musically, I found it a little boring. There wasn't much to shake things up between each song, so it feels like if you've heard one track you've heard them all. If you're into Metallicas style of music, that's good; there's plenty of it here. But I just found it to lack variety in the sounds that are offered.

Also, the bass was almost entirely cut from the final mix. That's a big deal breaker for me
---

Rage Against the Machine - Evil Empire

I was pretty biased going into this one. I'm a big fan of the popular RAtM songs I've heard (Fistful of steel, killing in the name, bulls on parade), but I've never delved deeper until now.

This album hits all the sweet spots for me. The drums and bass come together to make an irresistibly funky rhythm section, and Zack de la Rocha's vocals weave in and out of it nearly perfectly. Tom Morrelo may not be the most technical guitar player out there, but he's always doing something creative with it, adding distinct personality to each track.

Snakecharmer, Revolver, and of course Bulls on Parade were the stand out tracks for me. Great album

I'll update later with today's albums, which are Justice - Cross, and Mastodon - Leviathan

Country is a tricky subject, I wont take any suggestions for stadium country like Jason Aldean, Rascall Flats, or similar artists. but I'm fine with artists along the lines of Willie Nelson, David Allen Coe, etc

Any hip hop or RnB is fine as well

I probably wont delve into any crazy genres like speedcore and shit like that

Here's yesterday's albums

Justice - Cross

I'm a huge EDM fan. For the past decade it has vied for top spot with metal and hip hop, so I knew I was gonna like this one. I've only heard one Justice track prior, that being Waters of Nazareth, which was kind of me doing myself a disservice.

This, in my opinion, is a genre defining album. It released in 2007, which was before the edm craze started in the US, but having listened to it now, I can tell just how much influence this one had on the genre. They're a bit like a very aggressive Daft Punk, in all the right ways.

Standout tracks were D.A.N.C.E., Waters of Nazareth, and DVNO

---

Mastodon - Leviathan

Hoo boy. This one was a fucking ride. I'm a big fan of concept albums, so this one caught my interest. A rendition of Moby Dick in album form was super refreshing, and pulled off extremely well. The lyrics and music really manage to capture the feeling of a man risking the life of himself and his crew for revenge.

This was my first time listening to any Mastodon tracks, and I was nothing less than blown away. I'll be digging deeper into their discography soon for sure.

---
Bonus:
J. Cole - KOD

This is another artist I'm not terribly familiar with. I've heard the tracks Middle Child and 1985, but not much else. The only thing I knew about J. Cole going into this one is that in interviews, he seems to be a pretty thoughtful and socially conscious dude.

I was thoroughly impressed by this one. From the criticism of paper chasing in ATM, to the statements about the democratic process and mishandling of tax dollars in Brackets, there's almost always a thoughtful take away from each song. I'll be checking out more of his work for sure

Car speakers. Didn't go to school today, but tomorrow I'll be checking out Rush - 2112, and an Avalanche album

Today was stacked. Got through four albums

Rush - 2112

This was my first time hearing anything from Rush aside from Limelight. This is what I think of when I picture good classic rock. They seem to have aged far better than some of their contemporaries, so much so that I was actually blown away when I read that this one came out in 76. Very impressed, and I can see why Pistol Pete loves them so much

The Avalanches - Since I Left You
@MC_BatCommander
@CrimsonWaffle

Another very good suggestion. This whole album has a very groovy feel, and I love the way each track flows into the next. It flows so well, in fact, that I was gonna link a song to my friend, but all of them sound so much better together.

I'll be checking out Wildflower very soon

I'll write up my thoughts on Queens of the Stone Age - Self Titled and Stoned Jesus - Seven Thunders Roar later

Friday night lights is his only great project imo. But since your into it I recommend this and Pimp a Butterfly by Kendrick Lamar. And also black Friday, which is not an album but kendrick rapping over a Cole beat and Cole rapping over a kendrick beat. It's 11 minutes long for both

Queens of the Stone Age - Self Titled

I dont really have much to say about this one. I didn't really vibe with it, but I couldn't tell you why. I may give it another shot sometime and see if I take to it more

Stoned Jesus - Seven Thunders Roar

This one though...this one is a fucking masterpiece

I'm The Mountain is definitely the standout track here, but Bright Like the Morning and Electric Mistress were my other 2 favorites

I'll be visiting more of their albums for sure

---

Brand New - Deja Entendu
@Flockaveli

Turns out I'd heard almost everything on this one, but never listened to it straight through. This is one of the albums that I feel really define the post hardcore/emo genre of the 2000s. I'd recommend this one any day to someone wanting to get into the genre
