sonic 2 and sonic mania and even cd (as flawed as it is) have the best kind of open level design: it's pretty dense and full of content, but the layered design means that you can almost always fluidly and easily go from one path to another, making discovering routes and playing around with mechanics and physics easy and safe

Its so good: I try to model my Super Mario Maker stages after sonic game design instead of real Mario game design.

Got me a lot of likes and upvotes when I did. I should get SMM2 and start that up again. People really liked my layered levels over the they play themselves! Levels and other nonsense SMM birthed.

But I must point out that it is pretty iconic in New SMB because of the Penguin Suit Ive stages, and the mega Mushroom. Granted those are items and not stages so I guess the pint still stands.

auto levels don't bother me as much as the pathetic, copy-pasty "speedruns" do
so many "hold right and jump while following coins" levels that employ the same tricks with the on/off blocks, thwomps, fake kaizo blocks, and cannonball bounces
they aren't even good in a speedrunning sense because you're at top speed all the time with no accuracy or navigation required, so the only time you'll ever be able to get an increase in time is by using exploits like getting tiny speed boosts off the corners of ceilings (which is typically impossible anyway due to the heavily-scripted nature of these levels)

Not really. I guess it depends on what your preferences are. Mario tends to go for themes of nature, the elements, and fairy tale-esque locations. Sonic moves from tropical islands to casinos to space stations. I guess I'm more of a forest and castle guy than an oil factory and Death Star guy.

Both are great though.
