The character in question isn't designed as bait, but let's just say she's the type the incel boogeyman would hate.

The protagonist is muscular with short hair and a gender-neutral attire. And she's black. Her orientation also isn't decided upon as a love interest isn't important to the character. Personality wise, she's an assertive leader who avoids small talk and handles issues with expert problem-solving skills. She can't be baited into a fight, but she never loses once in one.

There's another woman on the team, more feminine by far, who has the ability to control water. That brings me to an unhappy realization: humans are mostly water. If my story is published, I think it's inevitable that some writer will turn her into a boring overpowered character. Even if I stress the restrictions on her powers, someone else will come behind me and give her the ability to dehydrate a bad guy at will or cause the seas themselves to rise up.

And you know why that will happen? Because limitless ability makes her a stronger female character. It's not enough that the protagonist is already a feminist action hero. It's not enough that the team has an equal number of women and men and is ethnically diverse. We have to turn the woman on the team with water powers into an out and out goddess of water.

That's my problem with modern politics. There's no such thing as someone giving enough or someone expecting too much. If there's a way to give a female character an upgrade, it becomes a responsibility to give her one.

I don't know if this is like an ice burn joke or something, but don't fuck with water if you don't want things to get OP. That ability always has the slipperiest slope, a veritable waterslide.

This is why I don't care for comic book characters like the ones in X-Men. Magneto is so overpowered that he can kill with a thought, from ripping iron out of a person's body, but then he loses all of the time because he forgets his own lack of restrictions and just throws metal beams at superpowered characters who are well-equipped to deal with steel.

I don't want my character becoming someone who sits back and watches her friends get hurt or killed because she forgets that her power over water and hydration is endless.
