Also Netflix is apparently getting a spin-off focused on Squidward?

I know Spongebob is still an icon (and a moneymaker), but the show has more than run its course at this point. >_>

When it comes to spinoffs, I always saw SpongeBob as a pillar for cartoons, a Mickey, a Bugs, etc., and they have all had many spinoffs over the years, so I never saw why he couldn't.

I won't lie, though, I wasn't really thinking SpongeBob as a 10-year old in the prequel show (I believe he's 10), Camp Coral, was going to still have the same voice, albeit slightly higher. I really hope that the movie kid voice isn't going to be his voice in the show, the voice just doesn't work for me after hearing SpongeBob for so long by Tom Kenny.

Speaking of which, this movie was supposed to be called "It's a Wonderful Sponge," but I see that changed. It is being labeled as the SpongeBob Movie 2, so I'm guessing the SpongeBob/Patrick buddy adventure movies are considered separate from Sponge Out of Water. I hated the obvious fact they are trying to promote the spinoff within the movie, but whatever. People will criticize, and they have, because the movie doesn't fit with "SpongeBob lore" but SpongeBob has countered itself so many times, it doesn't even matter tbh. I am sad about the lack of 2D animation but I suppose that is to tie along with how the prequel Camp Coral show will be fully 3D CGI animated. I always thought the 2D animation of the two movies worked really well, though, so it's still a bummer.

It's weird they are sort of reusing the plot for one of the most popular episodes (definitely for a post-season 3 episode too) and making a movie off of that. It's hard to justify paying the big bucks to see this when you can watch a similar experience in that episode at home and in the artstyle everyone feels comfortable with. That's just me, though. Finally, my biggest complaint with the first movie was that it was too focused on SpongeBob and Patrick, and it felt like a lot of the other Krusty Krew were left out. I always saw Squidward as the 2nd most important character anyways, but the movies seem to disagree which is a shame. I hope this doesn't end up being the same. As of now, this doesn't really have the "movie-feel" to it, it feels more like a glorified episode (and an episode that already happened too at that). The first two movies definitely felt more like movie plotlines (even if the 2nd was criticized for feeling too much like it was multiple episodes in one long package).

Did Spongebob ever get good again after the first movie? I gave up on it around season 7 or 8. I know the creator came back to the show after the second movie (before tragically passing away sometime later), but did that end up making a difference?

Nope. It did not. Kids still adore it though.
