Aren't creators supposed to be able to manually change their channel assessment? Is Youtube doing their usual thing of saying one thing but doing another against creator interests?

so this includes video games right

Nintendo, yes. Anything seen as kid friendly or if the channel is too kid friendly then it's at risk.

It's stupid because it's extremely subjective what could be for kids and what isn't for kids. Is a toy review of toys from the 80s for kids? A let's play of some random indie game? An old cartoon review? This is extremely dumb and needs to be changed.

I literally have a video of gameplay of Super Mario Odyssey, but I don't intend it to be for kids. Same with Crash Bandicoot 3, a game from the late 90s. I don't get this at all, it's very stupid.

@Superlinkbro

Long story short, the FTC wants money (hence the $170 million fine against Youtube as well as threatening to SUE Youtubers who don't classify their videos correctly with a $42,000 fine. I am NOT exaggerating when I say they will sue people for that money. In this video below, one of the main FTC guys within the first minute of the video below says he will SUE anyone... this includes casual Youtube users who have gameplay clips of something like Super Mario Odyssey and Crash 3 on their Youtube channels and don't classify them as "for kids". The video also shows what the FTC considers "for kids" and given the way the law is written, ALL video games technically fall under "for kids only" given their legal definitions. The video below goes over this). On a side note, some people are asking WHY the FTC is doing this now and not before given how Youtube has been in existence since 2006 or so. Well, Trump appointed brand new people to the FTC last year. The FTC wants lots of money (hence the reason why the fines are an expensive $42,000 per video in violation). I'll leave it up to you to draw your own conclusions:

Oh no I get that I just don't get like how or what they'll regulate, and I've already seen that video you posted, which helped but not completely. He did sort of explain the part with "light-hearted" games but even he wasn't 100% sure. Personally I think the FTC should understand their is a slight difference between "kid friendly" and "for kids". Although I don't think every game falls under it since stuff like Postal 2 and Call of Duty exist. Still it's all very vague.

Just wondering does anyone here follow Seanxlong on Youtube? I just rediscovered his channel this year and apparently his YouTube career has been a downward spiral for a while and this new For Kids rule kills YouTube paycheck.

I thought he was? Many of the comments on his older videos were about the ads being longer than his skits. And of course he does a lot of sponsors too.

They way its so vaguely worded, it can screw over almost any entertainment work. But hopefully the potential for a long drawn out legal battle would deter them from being frivolous with it... if YouTube doesnt automatically bow to their every whim.

Youtube already paid them money and convinced them that it is the content creators fault.
Youtubes only advice to people asking questions is contact your lawyer.
So Youtube will not fight this, and the average content creator cant afford a legal process...

In theory, Youtube can bypass this with an age gate and a link below every video to a page saying that you must be above 13 years to use this service.

Because it wouldnt alienate and gimp features for content creators?
