Youtube's been screwing over anyone who's not established in the mainstream TV and film industry for years now. Although unlike most times at least this one's because the goddamn government is sticking their head where it doesn't belong and forcing them to.

Makes sense. Toys are for children.

Not all of them.

For example, no kid is buying a $200-300 Hot Toy.

Most stuff from NECA and McFarlane isn't exactly made for children either.

That's right. Rich/spoiled kids instead get that stuff bought for them by their parents or generous grandparents.

FYI, a lot of popular toy review channels have already considered moving to other platforms.

Probably the biggest and most notable action figure review channel, TheFwoosh, has already stated they're putting up their last toy-related videos before moving to their own platform.

This is a pretty meaningless statement if you ask me. And also false.

A lot of people have made a steady living off of the platform and people often discredit a lot of the work content creators put in to keep their channel going.

Regardless of whether you feel it's justified to make a living off of YouTube videos, a lot of people DID, only to have YouTube sweep the rug out from under them. Not only that, but people have genuinely launched successful careers in various industries based off of the success of their YouTube channel. TheFwoosh in particular used the success of their YouTube channel to springboard their own action figure line.

There's literal action figures out there for ages 15+. Again, there's channels that specialize in reviewing Hot Toys. Kids don't buy that shit.

What about somebody reviewing a Mortal Kombat figure? Clearly the IP it's based on is not meant for kids, yet content creators have to either make it kid-friendly, or risk getting the hammer brought down on them just because they're reviewing a figure based off of the property.

There's also a grey area there. What if the "toy" in question comes with a decapitated head or someone's ripped out spine?

Ive also read that having your channel flagged as for kids guts your advertising revenue, because the kinds of adverts that can be shown to kids are more limited.

It might. I've noticed a lot of video gaming channels are already censoring their content, as well as movie review channels. For example, a lot of Mortal Kombat youtubers have to use D'Vorah for fatality/brutality/Fatal Blow/Krushing Blow videos if they want to monetize it because she's the only character in the game that doesn't have "real" blood.

I'd imagine at the very least for stuff like Mario, you're restricted on what you can say and do in your videos.

These are true. And even if you don't flag your channel as for kids, YouTube can basically decide that "Yes, it is for kids" based on the content and put a strike against you for inappropriate content.

It's a Catch-22 though. Content creators won't move over to Dailymotion/Vimeo because there's not that many viewers. Viewers won't move over to Dailymotion/Vimeo because there's not that much content.

Things won't change until YouTube screws up in such a manner that a massive number of content creators end up saying "Fuck this" and move over to other platforms, taking their viewerbase with them. And even then, it'll probably take a while before those platforms start to boom in popularity enough to where content creators can start to actually make decent money off their videos again. A lot of content creators, especially the ones that do YouTube for a living, probably don't want to go through that awkward period and just accept the losses they're taking on YouTube.

To an extent, yeah, but you'd still sorta have to start from the ground up on a new platform that hasn't quite shown yet to be a viable money maker.

Because depending on what they classify "adults" as, that could exclude 16-17 year olds, who the content might otherwise be fine for.

It's stupid because it's extremely subjective what could be for kids and what isn't for kids. Is a toy review of toys from the 80s for kids? A let's play of some random indie game? An old cartoon review? This is extremely dumb and needs to be changed.

I literally have a video of gameplay of Super Mario Odyssey, but I don't intend it to be for kids. Same with Crash Bandicoot 3, a game from the late 90s. I don't get this at all, it's very stupid.
