Joke is really on them, because if you are stealing, you aren't doing it from checkout to door.

The person checking is wasting their time, you can easily pocket things and hold them over the security alarms if they even have them, or slip around them, while he moves on to checking someone else XD

Most of the Walmarts I've been to have an unsecured exit in Home & Garden anyway, if I was gonna steal something I wouldn't carry it out through the main door

LOL, I work at Walmart and one of my coworkers is this older Italian guy from the Bronx (early 60s). He and his wife were shopping one day and he takes the cart to leave after they're done. It was kinda slow, so the guy standing by the door had literally seen them ring up and pay for their stuff. He pulls the "can I see your receipt" thing, and my coworker threatened to punch him "in the fuckin' throat". ^_^
How is your experience working at Walmart? I just got a part time job there. I start orientation on Saturday

Not everyone who steals tries to bring something out the door in a bag.

Some people will eat while they shop and leave the empty container lying on a shelf without paying. Thats stealing. Some people will put on a jacket or pair of sandals and walk out. The bag checker wouldnt think twice unless the thief forgot to remove the tags.

The theft that Walmart deals with cant be simply stopped by putting bag checkers at the entrances and exits. They are paying employees to literally stand there.

Use to work at Safeway, always get Micronesians or Blacks that try to steal meat or alcohol hidden in their bags.

Then one time I went to Sam's Club, seen one Micronesian got caught by the receipt checker trying to sneak out 3-4 unpaid raw meats/steaks (the 3 in a pack ones) hidden underneath other paid items. The receipt checker removed them from his cart lmao.

Just looking at the table by the exit where they store items that people try to steal, it seems like TC just has thin skin by getting mad at methods that catch thieves.

Scan receipt, scan random item, guesstimate that there's a correct number of items.
It's plausible to shoplift there, I guess, but you'd need to buy a large number of things, and get lucky with that random item.

Only do it if you have multiple copies of the same item.

They should hire people to stand at every single self check out and make sure the customer is ringing up every item properly, only way to get rid of receipt checkers.

Hey! If they are going to just stand there, maybe these people could just check out the items for the clients instead!

Makes no sense, Walmart already spent hundreds of thousands of dollars for those self check out machines, those things create jobs for maintenance people, software designers, factory workers, communication experts, if they went back to the old registers it would cost more money to put them back in and all those people would be out of a job.

They stop me all the time if I have big purchases, takes 2 seconds and Im on my way.

Of course people see this as the worst thing in the world though. Have to interact with someone and it takes away from your precious time....has to be evil.

Having my receipt checked has never bothered me. Although I do recall one time a clerk at Walmart asked for my ID and remarked "that's not you!" because I had longer or shorter hair than what was in the ID at the time. Pretty funny, all things considered.

Incorrect. Maybe where you live.

Yeah, I don't live in a shitty neighborhood. And yes, they have to scan the receipt and the shit on it. Not the least because have you seen how some of the shit you buy comes up on the fucking receipt?

I mean...it's a job. I've been there 20 years, didn't really see that happening, but it did. There's bullshit, but there's bullshit in any job. Depending on what you're doing, the work can either be hard or easy, but it can get kind of boring and repetitive, but in general it's not bad.

Maybe I'm in the minority here but this doesn't really bother me. If they ask, I'll show them my receipt and be on my way. I've never had an issue, like stated elsewhere they are just doing their job. I never want to be the guy making someone's day at work shittier.

Today I bought a single candy bar, right in front of the lady, and she asked to see my receipt which she watched get printed

Our Costco does this, except instead of just spot checking every few customers or looking out for unbagged items, they insist on checking everyone's cart and receipt

Costco is a separate case. It's a members-only store where you agree to have your stuff checked as a term of membership. Bypassing the line there is going to tick off the employees.
