Actually I think it's both political and economic at its roots. Hong Kong natives hate mainlanders because mainlanders are taking their best jobs---since so much business is done in China now, it's only the people with mainland connections who can rise to the top.

They also take the best spots at HK's top universities. Of course, the most brilliant person in a population of 1 billion is going to outshine the best and brightest of a population of 6 million.

Moreover, costs of living are ridiculous. I knew someone who was a business school prof there (full time, tenure track). Should be a good job but he could only afford a 600 sqft apartment and he had a family of 4. Imagine what it must be like to be blue collar there.
