There is literally no reason to push the latter. Anyone who does has more of an agenda than "really obsessed with specific numbers". Unless the Holocaust had such low real numbers that it basically didn't happen, then the specifics are irrelevant. When we get into the millions, genocides are just genocides.

Why do the numbers on the Holocaust need to be discussed? Is there legitimate possibility that the numbers are off in such a way as to change how we view the Holocaust? And what would be the reason that fake numbers have been spread amongst the public for 80 years?

Are you also a Battle of the Bulge skeptic? Does the population of Little Rock, Arkansas just not sit right with you?

Just because a discussion can be had doesn't mean it's logical or meaningful.

I don't think the discussion even needs to be harmful, for people who are major nerds about history. Just, every time it's brought up, it's done in a way to try and negate how fucking horrible the Holocaust was, to make Jews look less like victims and Nazis seem less like bad guys.

To the point where anyone with common sense just knows better than to try and make the earnest, non-evil conversation even happen.

The Nazis hated Jews the most out of anyone, but they had no problem with killing any people that they didn't like. There isn't another group in history more unabashedly evil than the Nazis, and it's really sad that people still associate with them today.

Outright deniers at this point are right up there with any other crazy conspiracy theorist. I pretty much think they're crazy and have weirdly latched onto this one point in history. I dont even necessarily believe it's anti semitism at this point since I cant see anything they'd gain from pretending it didn't happen.

I guess it is possible to deny the importance of the killing of Jews by looking at the 11 million figure. The main purpose of the Holocaust was to remove Jews from the world. First the Nazis boycotted Jewish businesses, then they declared Jews to no longer be citizens of Germany, then they segregated them outside of regular society to ghettos, then they sent them to death camps or killed them in mass shootings.

The Holocaust can refer to both the murder of 6 million Jews and to the murder of 11 million people total, Jews and other people the Nazis didn't like for racial + political reasons.
