Kojima:
I must say that the game received rave reviews, especially in Europe and Japan. Here in the United States, however, we have had stronger criticisms. Perhaps it is a difficult game to understand for a certain type of critic and audience. Americans are great fans of first-person shooters and Death Stranding isn't one, it flies higher.

I always try to create new things and disputes and discussions are fine, but it must be said that the Italians or the French have a different artistic sensibility that allows them to appreciate this kind of very original product, not only in video games but also in cinema.

Shyamalan:
I dont know whats going on with me and the critics in the United States, I gotta tell you. Somethings going on.

Theyve never got me, and its getting worse. Its almost like, go away. I also think Im getting more, you know, influenced by other cultures more, as you could see from the movie. So Im not doing like a straight-up American movie anymore. The tonalities are changing. I always had a European sensibility to my movies. The pacing is always a little bit off for them, and it feels a little stilted, and they need more electricity and all that stuff.

And Im like, this is the way I think of things. Cause, you know, Hitchcock and Kurosawa and Stanley Kubrick, these are my teachers. So it could be a little bit of that, that theres just a little bit of cultural difference. Just like on this movie, Im very used to getting on a plane from the U.S., having been savaged by them, and then going to, like in this case, I went to Japan next, and then theyre like, Genius!

I wouldn't compare Kojima to Shamalamalom. At least he did create something original. And I'm just guessing, but I assume that it's super fucking weird, so the argument that certain audiences won't enjoy it has some tiny amount of merit. Even then, it's still getting mostly good reviews.

His response also just sounds less generally smug than Shimalim's.

I grew up to the hip hop scene. I like people wearing their confidence and not tucking it away so insecure people don't get their panties in a bunch. Being proud of your creation and feeling it's next level is what you should feel like. Im sure you'd like to see him fold over this game for whatever reason, but that's not what get people this far.

Honestly Death Stranding's writing is just hot garbage. The general story on a broad scale is interesting, but he bludgeons you for hours with bland repetitive exposition and dull dialogue.

And then has the gall to claim that it's too highbrow for Americans, and the reason they don't like it is just that he thinks it "flew over them" because they only like shooting games.

It's good to be proud of your work. It's when auteurs like kojima or shyamalan act like it's never their fault people don't like their work, they're just too stupid to understand it. that's when I roll my eyes

I'm not following any of this Death Stranding stuff, but I remember when Batman v Superman was supposed to be 'too smart' for either American audiences or CBM fans in general.

Yes, American audiences are dumb and just want more action and explosions basically. Same thing Scorsese was saying about the MCU movies not being real cinema

Its pretty true

even if you believe that, it doesn't matter here since death stranding's writing is genuinely bad. It's clunky and stupid and shouldn't be treated like it's something only refined Europeans could properly understand.

As for its gameplay, there are many games without explosions that sell well in america so that excuse doesn't really fly either.

And honestly he made the decision to make his game for an american audience when he modeled his cast after American actors and wrote it all in English.

It's a shame it was told by Kojima, a man who has no idea what it means to be subtle.

Damned if you do, damned if you don't. If he were a lot more subtle with his writing people would complain too lol
