Ok, so the "free" upgrade to Windows 10 ended back in 2016, but as of April 2019 it was still possible to upgrade to 10 from 7/8/8.1 and get an activated license for free (apparently they never updated their activation servers). The article is a few months old so I don't know if it's been fixed or not.
https://www.zdnet.com/article/heres-how-you-can-still-get-a-free-windows-10-upgrade/ Once you have that, your Windows 10 license is linked to your Microsoft Account. If this is a pre-built that came with Windows 8.1 it should allow to use the burned-in key on the mobo with 10.

On a more serious note, beginning Linux is def a pain. But the power it grants you in the long term over the system and customisability is worth it. It's definitely not fit for everyone though. Especially since it has a limited program pool God I would love to go back to Linux. But I can't, I need Windows exclusive software.
