The tldr is that in the Early Middle Ages the Catholic Church started banning or otherwise discouraging incest, which the NPR article (Linked In the Reddit link above, so I have no idea why the TC didn't just link to that directly) claims lead to weaker family ties and eventually a growth in an individualistic mindset.

It's not impossible.

Contrast that with any Middle East country, where Cousin Marriage is much more common.
They tend to have a much more pronounced "Clan" culture than westerners.

the whole world outside of the west has more of a close knit family culture tho. pretty much all of asia and africa, and even parts of the west like parts of southern europe and the balkans still as well. and they don't all do cousin marriages or incest

In Hawaiian culture (before Christian missionaries destroyed it), the ali'i (Chief) class would engage in incest, a practice known as niaupi'o.
This produced a child incarnate of an akua (diety). Because the (Hawaiian) concept of mana, a physical and spiritual power passed down through genealogy, bestowed by akua, and/or through theft, grows stronger with each successive generation, the mating of two high-ranking chiefs is highly desirable (and thus, because the fear of the commoners attaining rank through this method, they were banned from participating in niaupi'o)

Its interesting to note that within Christianity, its intended for the church to be the supporting group for an individual, or a small family. Id be interested to see if the medieval church actually properly substituted a church clan in place of a family-based one.
