They've been wanting to get out of ownership for awhile - understandably sick of the random several-thousand-dollar repairs coming up and wrecking their savings - so they're selling and moving into a rental housing community. It's actually gonna be a nicer house than what they're selling so I'm happy for them, but I'm also sad as hell because of all the memories I have in that house.

They bought it when I was 4 and I lived there until I was 19. Every time I go over there it just feels warm and safe, and that's all gonna be gone in a couple of weeks. It's being sold to a flipper so they're gonna gut a lot of it and make it into something totally different. I'm a little excited to see what they do to it but at the same time I feel like when I see the pictures on Zillow I'm gonna think "how fucking DARE you?!"

Ugh...so much change going on in my life the past few years but that house and the local bowling alley were the last two things from my childhood that hadn't changed. Now I just have the bowling alley.

I'm sure plenty of other CEmen have gone through this - did it sadden you as well? How did you deal with it?

It's weird to think about someone else living in it but the memories don't disappear.

What's weirder for me to think about is half my childhood was spent in on post housing and there must've been countless family memories in all those places.

My childhood home got foreclosed on when I was 16 and I had to move in with my sister. My parents let us know we needed to move about two days before the foreclosure date. Moving an entire house in that short a time was probably one of my most unpleasant memories of my entire life thus far.

Damn, that's shitty. During our house hunt every time I saw a foreclosed home available it just made me sad as fuck knowing the previous owner's last several months in the place were stressful as hell.

Similar feeling when we put all our shit from our first house in storage and saw all the red locks (these were put on the units that were behind on payments and about to be auctioned). People's entire lives just essentially getting trashed. It's depressing as hell.

I don't even go to my old neighborhood anymore. My old house looks different, kids don't come out and play anymore, crime has gone up and my favorite places to eat have either relocated or just no longer in business.

It's still a nice neighborhood - a bunch of young families have moved in in recent years and I see kids out playing basketball and riding bikes every time I drive by and it's just like when I was a kid playing with my friends there.

Now three of those friends have moved thousands of miles away, one died of an accidental overdose, one was killed by a drunk driver, and the other dropped off the face of the Earth and no one's heard from him in like 12 years.

Time's a bitch, man.

My parents came from Korea to Canada before I was born. During my childhood we werent very well off and my parents always rented apartments or townhouses. We moved almost EVERY YEAR. I never realized it but my sister told me when I was older that its because mom and dad were always behind on rent. Put down first and last on a 12 months lease then fall behind part way through, knowing they had the security blanket of it being hard to kick out tenants so they would get to be late on rent and stay the full year before our lease was up and we got kicked out and moved onto the next apartment building.

Needless to say I have fond memories of certain places but nothing like a family home.

I do feel bad when my parents talk about growing up in South Korea. I've been twice with my mother and sister but my dad has never been back. He came to Canada at 18 and he will be 59 at the end of this month.

Well for most of my teenage years they were part owners of a variety store and if he wasnt there the store wouldn't be open essentially and we needed the income. We couldn't afford to take 2 weeks off i guess.

A few years ago he had a big medical scare and doesnt work much now, and honestly they are still not well off. I lost a little sympathy here with age as I realized they do a lot of things the wrong way and its not an ignorance issue. Things like avoiding paying income tax as well as complete irresponsibility with their money but that's a whole different can of worms

Also my fathers family came over with them back in the early 70s. Both his parents died here as well as my one uncle committing suicide a few years ago so all he has left is his sister.

He misses the memories of Korea but i honestly dont know if he truly wants to go back anymore.

My mother has family there still and a brother in Japan

My parents are getting closer to retirement and talking about moving into a lake house in Tennessee. I would honestly consider buying my childhood home if they do end up selling it. It just sucks that its so far away from my work and I dont think I could get the same type of job out there. Im sure I could find a decent job in that area....but I do like my current employer.
