Best atmosphere, best lead character, best supporting cast, best villains and best location too. And that music.
All of those things combined just gives MGS1 this really great vibe that was never really recaptured in the sequels. The whole atmosphere of Shadow Moses is probably one of my favorites of all time which is pretty incredible for a PS1 game. Something about that combination of music, color tone, the cold etc. was really memorable. That intro of sneaking to the elevator and hitting the title card alone has more atmosphere than most games out there. Such a cool game. --- Kind Regards, Darmik ... Copied to Clipboard!

Agreed, mostly because of the music actually. As mentioned, 3's jungle is also atmospheric. Well, they all are really.

I think MGS3 has the better story and is the better game but I dunno that was basically a jungle with James Bond inspired music to me.

Unpopular opinion, but Revengeance is better in all those categories, although I'll accept people saying it doesn't count because it's a spin-off title. I'm also biased because I'm a huge fan of spectacle action games made by Platinum.

I think the music did have a lot to do with it.
